Rolex 16700 Pepsi GMT Jubilee - Thoughts?

Hi all. Looking to buy my first Rolex (not the best time, I know) and I've been offered this L-series 16700 GMT. Original box, no papers. Very recently serviced at a RSC (replaced crystal, crown and gaskets) and not been worn since. I am yet to see the watch in person so pictures is all I got. Wanted to hear your thoughts about it and whether the price of EUR10.8k (~$11.8k) is a decent one, before I take the trip. I did a tiny bit of research on pricing but it tends to vary soooooo much. So I'm not sure whether I'm getting a decent deal here or being ripped off. What are your thoughts?

That is not the correct dial for a late 1980s 16700. The dial on the watch is earlier than an "L" serial number 16700.

What should the dial look like?

Looks right to me. Didn't the 16700 only first appear in 1988?

It should have 50 (not 55 Datejust) end links btw if it came originally on a EU Jubilee, and check clasp yr codes against the Rolex year codes perhaps too to c 89 - no biggy if replaced though.

Price of £9.5k if everything (vaguely) in order, is ok imho.

My understanding is circa 88-99, and according to following site:

.
Not all 167.. GMT "Swiss - T<25" Dials are the same. It could have been changed during its lifetime.
Note the taller coronet and text alignment on the OP's watch vs a 16700 Dial.

I don't believe the main box is correct.

That YRO booklet (July 2000 ff.) did not come with the watch.

That swing-tag (June 2015 ff.) did not come with the watch.

Were the shoulders not refinished at service? Are the full service estimate and invoice available?

It's a crudely and incorrectly put-together "set" which gives some cause for wider concern.

I would move on.

Sorry, it might look correct but it isn't. One thing that is very common for Rolex dials during this era is the dial coronet like the one found on the watch depicted below. You'll find this short, fat style of coronet on the SUBMARINERS, GMT-MASTER II and probably other models as well.

The dial on the watch depicted by the OP might have been from an earlier GMT 16750 but it definitely isn't from a Rolex in the "L" serial era.

The following photos depict the correct dial and insert found on an R serial GMT-MASTER 16700. The OOXCR code on the back of the warranty paper translates to February 25, 1991, which is the delivery date from Rolex USA to the dealer.

Good eye Haywood, this set is definitely cobbled together.

The box is much later than the watch and is not correct as well as the Your Rolex Oyster booklet.

To clarify, I don't think the box is genuine, never mind correct for this watch.

It could be Haywood. I don't recall that color of pillow and pillow wrap for this type of outer box set. The "granite-looking box set was notoriously counterfeited more than any other Rolex box set.

Perhaps the best known internet seller in the UK (where the OP is) has supplied hundreds of these box sets, all with that type of fabric on the cushion and wrap..... It's not thirty years old ;-)
