Platinum YM, new or old?

New platinum yacht master vs old one

there is a clear distinction between the newer platinum yachtmsster and the older one. the newer one is creamier in color and less course in the grainy look the older one looks darker, grayer and more course.

which do you prefer?

i have the newer one and thinking of reading it in for the oder version.

Sorry for the ignorance but I wasn’t aware of a difference. Are you talking about the slate colored face or the oystersteel platinum color of the metal?

I'd go with the newer one. The clasp upgrade alone is worth it in my opinion.
The grain is very apparent in the sunlight as well. It matches the bezel quite nicely, as the bezel gets a bit of that sparkle, too.

When I bought my 116622 pt dial, some ADs still had the older 16622 in stock. What made me decide to go for the latest iteration were a series of elements I valued, namely an improved movement (blue parachrom hairspring), a milled-out clasp, a blue Chromalight, a redesigned bezel mechanism and aligned endlinks (flush with the lugs). Price difference wasn't significant enough to make me buy the 16622 (less than €1,000 difference at the time, where I live).

When it comes to the texture of the dial, only the very early 16622s had the coarser finish, the later ones had the same finer sandblasting grain as the 116622, which still sparkles in the sunlight. It's more subtle, not necessarily a bad thing.

Another advantage of the 116622 is you can swap the dial for the blue and slate ones at the RSC, which you wouldn't be able to with the 16622.

I would imagine that the solid platinum bezel adds some heft to the watch. Can anyone who owns one comment in its weight?

I have the original in a ladies’ size. I got it new in early 2001, so before the engraved rehaut. I love the dial textures and especially the way its dial sparkles in the sun. It has the foldover bracelet clasp so it’s sturdy enough, far better than the 16200 DJ clasp of the same era.

Definitely try them both on first.

I would take the 16622 if you can source the earlier ones (with coarser dial, more sparkle). but agreed the upgrades to the new one are very attractive...

The 16622 has the old stamped clasp, the 116622 has the latest milled out one.

Much better reserve on the new movement if that means anything to you. Also there have been issues in small numbers with the newer movement.

That combination does not exist afaik.

Go for the very early 16622’s. In addition to the coarser more sparkling dial the YM print in red uses fat font.
Look at watchwallpapers from Jocke with beautiful pictures.

The bracelet from the YM was always solid, no worry’s about that.

The protruding lugs I find an icon of its time and quite like them.

I fitted a new Oysterclasp from a DJ to give it the modern feel and because I don’t like the clasps with the safety latch.

For the fun I wear it sometimes on a super jubilee as well

I would go for the newer version of the Platinum Yatch master, more improved and advanced compared to the old version, IMO.

Would love to see some pictures. Thought of switching out the clasp on the older dial

Newer 6 digit for the bracelet and clasp
Must be a 116 though not a current 126 with that awfully unreliable 32 series movement

I have the first one, the 16622. My customs is a Daytona clasp, red datewheel, parachrome spring and a glassback.

Here is some fresh pics of it.

The way you tell between the two at just a fleeting glance is that the new version has blue seconds hand, the old version red, is that right? Dial colors are the same though texture different?

We're talking differences between 16622 and 116622 with pt dial, both discontinued. Both had a red second hand and red YM lettering. The 116622 also came with a blue dial in 2012 when released, on top of the pt dial, then a slate dial (aka rhodium with blue second hand and YM lettering in 2016).

The differences between 16622 and 116622 pt dial are subtle.

The 116622 had the following updates:

- Oysterlock clasp with Easylink
- Reshaped lugs and case
- Revised bezel with ball bearing and 120 clicks (instead of spring loaded with 60 clicks)
- Blue Chromalight instead of green Superluminova
- Amagnetic Parachrom blue hairspring
- Endlinks aligned with lugs
- Thinner red font on the dial
- Thinner sandblasting bead on the dial for a smoother finish compared to a grainer finish in the very early 16622
- Slightly different font on the bezel numerals

I have a Z series 16622, and I am green (or red) with envy over your fat font! There are times I find the Yacht-Master type too thin and not that legible. Been trying to source a fat font dial with little luck.

Which Daytona bracelet did you use?
