What did this buying story tell you?

It’s a genuine question as I’m weighing the pro/con to decide if I still want to deal with dealer and this particular SA.

I bought couple of IWC and one Omega from this dealer back 5 and 10 years ago. And since then I went radio silence on watches and didn’t know anyone there anymore.

Recently I developed an itch on DJ36, so I picked up the phone got David (hypothetical name). I told him I wanted a YG/Steel DJ 36 ideally champagne color with no diamonds. He was very straightforward and told me there is only one DJ available now that is YG/steel but golden fluted dial with 10 diamonds indices. I said let me take a look and booked an appointment in 8 days. He said call again before you come to see if it’s still here because we don’t know and we don’t take deposit and we don’t maintain waitlist, whoever comes in pay will get it. Sure I thanked him and hung up.
1 day later I figured my schedule was freed up and I could go next day so I called again and this time David was not in and Cathy (hypothetical name) answered. She said no DJ36 has come to store ever over the past few weeks and she didn’t see any coming either. I confronted her right away telling her David said there was one. She paused a few seconds and went “let me check”. A minute later with the imaginary check she said indeed there was one she didn’t know. I said ok I’m coming tomorrow.
Next day I showed up on time and she greeted me with the watch and I liked it on my wrist and expressed : even though I wanted a champagne dial without diamonds but I found this golden fluted dial with diamonds does look less conspicuous than I thought and I really like it and I will take it.
To my surprise, she tried to talk me out of it: you don’t have to force yourself if it’s not what you like. You can wait.
I said I like it, I take it. She goes : fine, with unenthusiastic tones.
Then the deal was concluded and I was greeted away with a box of Rolex chocolate. End of the story.

So I’m really puzzled, why was this Cathy seemingly unwilling to sell me the watch? The watch was there and David was ready to give it me but this Cathy was trying to hold on to it. What’s wrong with her?
I knew I didn’t have continuous buying history with this dealer albeit couple of IWC and an omega. I kind of know nobody there now.
Now I’m thinking to add another Rolex, maybe YM or wait for BLRO. But I’m kind of hesitant to continue deal with the dealer especially this Cathy lady.
What’s your take in this story?

Probably Cathy lost her commission because David accrued the sell?

"too many words" as I talked too much to the SAs, or I typed too many words in such a boring and simple story?
pardon me if the latter, English is not my strongest foreign language.

I liked your account of the experience and found it constructive.

In these situations, there are a lot of variables and people are mercurial. Personally, I will not be the least bit disquieted in any way by some store clerk (and that is all they are) who plays it so unwise as to exhibit their unkempt emotions in front of a customer who is spending thousands of dollars.

If you were really provoked (I would be) you could craft a short but strongly worded note to the store owner. The best way I have found to do this is to inform the proprietor of my experience while not mentioning any names of employees. This keeps things from being "personal"

The note citing a short version of my history with his establishment including past and present acquisitions, the fact that my last encounter was rancid, and maybe he should be more attentive to his customer-facing assets noting that I purchased the timepiece but arguably other clients may not have. The mystery implied and infused into the owner's mind will be; "How many sales have been lost due to..." Needless to say, it's likely arses will sting.

I am an old businessman and have the occasional iniquitous habit of thinking like one as a customer. I also enjoy confrontation and the taste of my own blood, but that is another thread.

There. I feel better!

Cathy probably has seen this happen before. Person wants a particular model, found it's hard to get, buy available model instead, a week later customer complains how they didn't really like it.

I think she was just being helpful.

I think people try and read into it too much with Rolex SAs. Maybe she simply didn't know they made that watch available to the public, maybe it irritated her the way you confronted her (your words) on the phone, maybe she's just sick of people calling only for Rolex, maybe it's that time of the month, maybe she's going through a bad breakup. You got a watch, be happy, and maybe only deal with David if you go back.

Just talk with David. Send him a thank you, maybe a card. Tell him he is you’re boy!

Otherwise whatever. This post is kind of silly. Who cares about this woman’s behavior. Seems minimal….

I don’t understand the current obsession I observe with SA analysis and behavior. A watch was obtained. If another is sought, make contact with someone that works in the store…..right?

Sounds like you are just overthinking it, if you ignore the fact she was a sales assistant, it made perfect sense to tell you not to force yourself, that's sensible advice.
Of course she is a sales assistant but she knows she can sell easy anyway so there is no real benefit selling to someone who may not really want it.

Buy a watch because you want a watch, not because you want a warm fuzzy experience at the AD. Obviously rudeness is one thing but she just sounds indifferent, could be a bad day, we all have them.

Just ask for the manager. You're a customer of 10 years. Ask for the manager to help you out next time.

This accusation would require you to have been in the room with her and also in her mind

She was ticked off that David called in sick and she had to cover his shift. She resolved to discourage clients from coming in since she already had a busy day. She tried to get OP off the phone but he didn't take the hint! When in the store she couldn't be bothered to go through with the sale since it required pulling the piece from inventory and printing a receipt. Why can't people just leave her alone! Ugh

Or at least that's one possibility

Simple she didn’t receive a commission as you are David’s customer.

Likely a commission issue since you first inquired with "David". Just my guess.
