Rolex In Mexico City

Yes, another post about safety concerns when wearing a Rolex while traveling. Have a groan, and also let me know what you think?

Heading to Mexico City for the first time on Monday and staying in Condesa and plan on sticking to safer areas.

For those who have been, would you feel comfortable exploring with an explorer 1? Pretty low key…

Thoughts? Thanks!

One of my favorite cities in the world. I have been there around 15 times over last 3 years
Always wore a Rolex… but nothing flashy
Its a very safe city
Condesa, Roma Norte, polanco
In Polanco, at moments you will think you are in Beverly Hills

Enjoy and havr fun

I've been to Mexico City a couple of times. I purchased a Rolex from an AD in Guadalajara. I personally wouldn't wear a Rolex in Mexico City. Just my 2 cent.

I went to Mexico City last year and have been all over Mexico. I personally would not take a Rolex; I didn’t even take my Tudor. Why take the risk of a robbery or worse. Low key is the way to go, don’t attract unnecessary attention. As an added note Police are useless in DF.

Thanks for the comments everyone. I wore it and had zero issues - stuck to nicer areas like Roma and Condesa.

Such an amazing place, I can’t wait to go back. Highly recommend!

I have no interest in going anywhere in Mexico, never mind wearing a Rolex. Hope you have a good trip, back.

Very happy to hear that everything went well. Mexico City is definitely one of the best places to visit there so much you can do!

Asking questions about wearing a watch in a resort in Mexico is the equivalent of asking if it's safe to fly along the Iranian border at 39,000 feet on a Qatar Airways flight after leaving the gulf while sipping champagne.

Plenty of cases of "spotters" watching arrivals at the airport and coordinating following and subsequently robbing the arrivals once they get out on the city streets. I've travelled there some and while there are nice areas of the city, the risk seems too high for me. I've always worn something cheap (Casio digital) while there.

I was in Mexico City earlier this year and decided not to wear a Rolex because of all the stories I’ve heard. I felt more comfortable wearing my SS Cartier Santos. Never felt unsafe as long as you stick to the nice areas. Food is amazing there. Enjoy!

I can imagine that the explorer I wouldn’t draw too much attention. I wouldn’t go with a Daytona or GMT. Just my 2 cents. A vacation is for relaxing en enjoying, not worrying if i could get robbed. I love my watches but love my life even more.

So, the common theme here is "stick to the nicer areas." I suspect anything can happen anywhere any time. Take whatever you will enjoy having and wearing and not worry about. Ideally, everything you bring should be replaceable without much trouble or cost, if it is damaged, lost or stolen.

I wear my nice watches all over Western Europe (including Barcelona!) and some other parts of the World but will not wear a Rolex in Mexico unless I’m staying at a resort and not leaving.

Mexico City like all of Mexico can be very lawless and corrupt. And that’s just the police.

I'm Mexican and I wouldn't wear Rolex in CDMX.

Under a sleeve in winter maybe but definitely not in summer.
If you decide to do so, do not seat in restaurants that face the street or if you're driving don't drive with your watch arm exposed. Just basic awareness measures and you should be ok.

If I'd do it I'd be a little paranoid and not enjoying my time in the city.

I came home from CDMX without the watch I took with me. The police took it as "payment" for a "fine." I was leaving a nightclub and a girl handed me her solo cup so that she could put on her jacket. The second that drink touched my hand (I did not take a sip or walk more than two steps) the police grabbed me and threw me in the back of a police car. Thankfully I left the Rolex at home and brought a Seiko diver.

Growing up just a couple hours drive from Mexico, I have heard countless stories just like this.

I also have a couple very well-off Mexican friends who primarily live in the States now and they tell me I’d be crazy to wear a Rolex around Mexico.

I have had, many years ago, wealthy mexican clients robbed at gunpoint leaving a nice restaurant in Polanco. Horrible experience with his wife.

There are what 30 million people in CDMX and the 1% of that is very wealthy, go figure why they have bodyguards.

You mean... by Mexican standards? Because it is most certainly a high crime city where I would never wear a Rolex, a watch that represents many months of salary for the average person, while walking around the streets https://www.numbeo.com/crime/in/Mexico-City

It basically makes you a walking, and relatively easy payday, with low chance of reprisals for the thief.

Some of the members of this forum (I'm guessing mostly boomer generations) appear to be delusional about real-world risks just because so far they didn't get burnt. I hope it doesn't get them in serious trouble one day.

It should be nothing but common sense to not make yourself a juicy target in countries where human life is cheap and where people are routinely kidnapped, tortured and/or killed.

Totally agree. Thanks for sharing link to numbeo, very useful.

No need to tempt fate. My wellbeing is worth more than wearing a nice watch in a place with a high criminality index, where some locals will interpret it as raising a middle finger to everyone around. Without protection, it'd be asking for trouble.

I live in Monterrey, in Nuevo Leon in Mexico and am totally comfortable walking around and wearing some nicer pieces. None are overly flashy though. I definitely wouldn't wear solid gold etc.
