OH this is a good one

So, my friend, who knows everything about everything, told me I am ruining my Rolex. The below pic are my two watches, my sub, and a 1980 Chronosport manufactured model called a Scuba Pro, that I wore as a diver off the coast of California in the 1980s. My only other watch is a cheap Casio I wear to the gym. I (try to) go every day, and when I do, I leave both my watches on the display stand in my bedroom. The Scuba Pro is (of course) a battery powered movement, and hence that is the source of me ruining my Rolex… according to him. He said:

The Scuba Pro, being electric, emanates a magnetic field, this magnetic field will destroy (his words) the Rolex automatic movement. He said I should keep the two watches several feet apart at all times. … …. ……

Someone tell me I haven’t ruined my Rolex please!

I would dare say that wearing your Rolex while using a computer, a cell phone, an oven, etc generates more of an electrical field than a small battery powered watch that barely pulls any (that's why the batteries last years).

Your friend is silly.

Edit: Oops. Just saw your post count. LOL...you definitely know better! Got me.

Yep, totally ruined. At least you had a solid month or two with it.

Tell your friend you use anti-emf soap to clean it. Reduces emfs by 99.9%

I use that every day to protect mine from those pesky emfs. Can’t beat the stuff — my Home Depot carries it, so it’s not big money.

Tell him you also own an EV, a Tesla Model 3 which has a Static Magnetic Field (SMF) of 0.2 milliTesla and an Extremely low-Frequency Magnetic Field (EMF) near the vicinity of a DC charging installation and inside the EV upto 30 microTesla close to its internal electrical equipment and your Rolex watch has NO issues whatsoever!

If a Rolex was ruined just by sitting on your nightstand, would any of us want one? For years, each night I set my Rolex on a cloth coaster on the top of my dresser. Also up there within 12 inches in each direction is my wifi module and an ELECTRIC digital clock. All my watches are fine, even my WG sub just like yours. Duh!

You should be fine.

Cell phones and certain other electronic devices can magnetize your watch however.

Your friend is just jelly, as the kids say….. I’m guessing he doesn’t own a Rolex, or he’d know better. Anyone, who has read anything about these movements, would know that it would take a hell of a lot more than a quartz watch battery to magnetize that watch. In short, your friend is an idiot! No offense meant…. Skip that last part.I meant every word!

Naval Aviators are always ruining perfectly good equipment.

If your friend truly knows "everything about everything", I would assume he is an Air Force guy. More than likely schooled at the Zoo or (at minimum) a ROTC guy.

Post in jest all you like, but the bottom line is, within a week your Sub will be completely ruined and unrepairable.

Your friend is 100% correct.

32xx movements are particularly sensitive because of the changes in the mainspring.

Also don't leave it nears crystals.

Or anything pyramid-shaped.

The human body produces its own electromagnetic field. Your friend is, at best misinformed and at worst, an idiot
