Rolex Explorer for Military Service

I’d like to purchase a watch (for my son) for his military service and I’d like for him to be able to use it in the field if he wants to. He currently wears a $50 G Shock and it works fine so I do know about that option. I see some guys gravitate towards subs and sea dwellers for durability but was wondering if the Explorer Mk1 would hold up as well. He won’t be diving with it but it will be in the water a fair amount and subjected to very severe circumstances.

Second question - can anyone recommend an engraver? I would like to have the case back engraved with a personal message (I know it will hurt value but that’s not a consideration).

Thank you for your feedback.
