DJ-36 Intent to Purchase- Thoughts?
Hello all new to the forum. I have always admired rolex watches and luckily have reached the point where I am ready to purchase. I have been researching diligently and decided on a DJ 36 Ref. 126234 with Blue Baton and Jubilee bracelet. After researching and learning about the current state of the market with gray prices for this model 25-30 % above MSRP I simply decided I would not be willing to may the premium.
I went to multiple ADs in my area and nothing seemed to promising. One told me they were not taking more on the "list" and one just didn't seem it was in the cards for me. The third one I contacted said sure we can put an 'intent to purchase' for the exact model I wanted but they said it could be a few months. They seemed really positive and I was excited to get such a response so I put 20 % down for the watch. Does anyone have any experience with 'intent to purchase'? Did you get the watch in a reasonable time or did it feel like you were simply being taken advantage of by the AD to give them an interest free loan? Overall I am ok with it even if it takes up to a year but will feel better once it is on my wrist. I love reading the posts on this forum as they have been helpful in my search and look forward to contributing in the future. -Tuzz313 |

Dealers are businesses, just like any other business. It is not uncommon for businesses to ask for a deposit for a particular product.
It seems that most folks just want to be on a "list", but sales staff often have to go through quite a few on that list to actually find a buyer. Perhaps this is a method for this Dealer to shorten those lists. Or it could be a sales associate just padding his sales statistics.

From what I hear Rolex does not like the term "lists." So now it is an "expression of interest" or an "intent to purchase" in your case. Sounds like they committed to deliver the watch to you for the deposit. Hopefully, it turns up for you in the time frame they mentioned. Very nice combo.

If you can get one in a few months I’d be giving it a shot

Doesn’t seem like a sustainable business model for ADs to take advantage of their customers by extracting small interest free loans from them. Gonna take a long time for that interest savings to ad up to anything resembling profit. It seems like they’d do better to make a focused effort to try to get you the watch you want. Give ‘em a chance.

If they're that hard up for funds, maybe they won't even be there in a few months. Also, what happens if you find another one in the meantime? Or something you like even better? Tastes change over a few weeks, never mind months or a year.

What do you have to lose if that deposit is refundable? I would do it.

I wouldn’t leave a deposit, too much can happen during the indeterminate period until the AD decides it’s your turn

Others have done the same with 50% up front, and gotten their watches. If another AD comes through first, the deposit is refundable. You should be fine. The AD should know soon, if Rolex agrees to fulfill the order. Again, if not, you will be refunded. So, it was a good move. I’ve seen that watch in 41 mm, and it’s stunning. I think you made a good move! I look forward to the incoming pics. Kat Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk |

I've done it twice.. Got both pieces as desired, although I did have to wait quite a while for each, the second one almost 9 months. Albeit during the height of the craze I guess, but things seem to be getting better so I don't foresee you having to wait that long..

I just did an intent to purchase on a 36mm Datejust (126200 - smooth bezel, jubilee, silver dial).
I got the watch this past Friday, 4 weeks to the date of putting down a 50% intent to purchase deposit. Zero issues, watch came quick, AD told me Rolex confirmed acceptance of the request for my configuration. Family owned AD (2 locations), in business since 1951. Would do again. |

I will venture a guess and say that you will have the watch in hand in 3 months, maybe sooner. Best to you!

I guess I'm just unlucky. I registered my interest in 3 watches last August. Lots of in person follow up with the AD.
I've since bought my first pick via Grey. No calls from the AD on that same DJ reference. Coming up on a year and glad I got my number one, even at a premium. I hope you get yours soon!

Just read the whole thread. Several members responded that they had positive results, using that approach. AD checks with Rolex, to see if they can fulfill the specific request. If not, Buyer’s down payment is refunded. It’s really a low risk move, and hardly a “rookie mistake”. It is up to each individual AD, as to whether or not they offer this service. That’s absolutely true. I often wonder if anyone finally “gets the call”, and thinks to themselves, “Oh crap! I don’t have $12,000.00 sitting around, right now!” I pay cash for all my watches, so make sure I am ready for that call…. Kat Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk |

I’ve never been asked for a deposit before but I get why some ADs do it. Sure thins out the tire kickers. As long as it’s fully refundable I don’t see a problem if it assures you a watch.

At least the way it was sold to me, it's not so much that it guaranteed a watch, but it put you in a smaller, priority pool over other buyers on the general interest "list"; e.g. if you went in there and just casually said you wanted to go on a list for model XXX, and then I come in a month or two later and do an intent to purchase on that same model XXX, I'm going to get priority on the next one that comes in.

All you've essentially done is left a deposit. They've called it something else. My AD doesn't take deposits. If they did I would pay one. It comes down to who you trust. One could assume that by paying a deposit your chances of obtaining the watch are improved. Time will tell.
