Whats Hyping the Daytona 116500 Again!

Anyone notice that prices of preowned Daytona 166500 white dial are approaching upwards of $40K again? The black dial a little behind. And this is posted today by a trusted TRF seller. It’s quite confusing. It’s only preowned Rolex sports models still being hyped. Even AP and Vacheron have come down in price significantly with the rest of the market. Omegas and other luxury Swiss are at pre pandemic prices and are all lower than MSRP. Thoughts and insights welcome.

No clue on prices... I like my white dial daytona but would never pay those prices.

I've seen no evidence of any new hyping whatsoever TBH.

If anything, both the white and black dial version are the cheapest they've been since the early 2022 peak.

Yes. I saw that. It’s becoming an outlier though.
But the white dial is between $33-39 K!

Chase with Nashville watch usually has prices more in line with the market. davidSw is on the pricier end.

FWIW, Watchcharts is showing a market price of around 29k which is a steady decline.

I get the sense some sellers price their watches at a ridiculous price trying to rope in a sucker who still think the prices are crazy high.

This ^.

Even the Chrono24 graphs are showing a slow but steady decline on both dial colours. I think the higher priced pieces are the outliers at the moment.

Whats Hyping the Daytona 116500 Again!

I don’t know, but I do think the price on that 116500 will slowly, and again I’m saying slowly, rise. Especially once the 126 versions come out, and everyone sees the crazy high premiums those watches are going for.

What’s that saying about tides and boats.

We are in the slowest market time at late summer for all models. It’s like this every “normal” year.

I agree. It's probably near a bottom. With the price crash of the last 1-2 years, prices appear to be back near the trend line. Basically what they were trading for pre-pandemic + inflation.

Should increase from here at a rate slightly exceeding inflation.

You have got to consider the 116500 might be on the way up due to it's relatively short production run, plus some members here have voiced that they prefer it over the newer model.

Summer is usually slow anyway... expect things to pick up over the next couple of months

I think it’s dealer wishful thinking. They can list for whatever they want to make it seem like the market is hot. Then they spend the next 2-3 months bumping their sale with $25 price cuts

A black dial just hammered a few days ago on Loupe This for $22.5k (24.75k with premium). Nobody is paying $40k for a white dial.

Market is always slow at the beginning of the year due to tax season…
Market is always slow in early summer to due family vacations and summer travel…
Market is always slow in late summer…
But the market gets hot around the holidays…

It’s all wishful thinking and i doubt much is moving at those prices.

There is no hype. You can find unworn for 32-34K or slightly under. And used for $28-30K. Normal prices for discontinued SS White Daytona.

I don't know if I'd call any if this normal haha, but perhaps it is the new normal.

That said, just before Basel Daytona prices on the white dial in new condition were down a lot. Obviously the retirement of the 116500 bumped them back up again.

I personally don't see them going back down much but I don't see them going up either. Once the 126500s are regularly hitting the market I think the 116500s will stabilize and settle.

Hype guys will want last gen to show off when 126 are out. So nobody will look at 116 series at this period. I guess they should low again before some rises, when the hype on 126 calm down. Don’t you gentlemen get used to this since few years ?
Greys are trying to unload and feed a hype that will actually be focused on new references, as always.

They are just offer prices. If you get lifted at that price, fantastic for you the seller.

You probably don’t even need to own the watch? If you can get someone to lift you at 40k, and cover by buying one at 30k…

A spread that wide would cover transaction costs.
If there is no cost to posting… can’t see why a seller wouldn’t do this? Maybe it even gives a signal that prices are rising again (which they don’t appear to be).

Where things really trade at is going to be very different from a lot of these offers

Definitely new normal i believe it will be in this price range for next couple of years

I don't think 126's will be highly available to grey market before second or third year so they might easily be priced near or over 45K. Rolex increasing prices a bit aggresively for last 2 years, if they keep increasing, i don't see 116 prices coming down either.

Dealers i know are not trying to unload their inventory for SS Daytona's. They are still buying.

Different dealers offered me near $28.5K for my slightly used 2023 116500 Panda. They are buying unworns for 30K. (This was last week, i'm not planning to sell it, just got prices out of curiosity.)

Also commonly estimated price from different dealers for 126 is over or near 45K

--

It's my unbiased opinion. Hope prices come down so i can add black dial for a better price. But doubt that.

if you're saying 2nd or 3rd year for first to hit secondary, I would expect it get's listed, and possibly sold, at north of $45k - wouldn't be surprised to see it get to $60k.

To your point about the 116 - 2x MSRP is $29,100; doesn't seem like a reach if those in excellent+ condition regardless of year stay around this point once the new vintage unworns burn off.

I'm sure we will see some of them for sale in 2-3 months but i mean there will only be few in market for first 1 or 2 years, that scarcity would maintain higher prices

Of course all bets are off if we see them trading near 35K We are in unpredictible times...

I see Panda at 29,000-32k from private party on here and other sites. Seems like 33-36ish at the grey dealers. To your question, I think it's the preparation for the first 126 models about to be out with a very stiff premium, pulling up the 116 models up with them. As someone else pointed out, a rising tide... So, they probably will creep up for a while, albeit slowly. Both are great watches though, buy what you love or can afford, no real wrong choice.
