Who's paying $13,000 for Datejusts?

Just took a gander at the For Sale posts and there are several DJ's for $12.5/13. I dont get it.....at all.

Nobody. The grays are in denial. There are steel, non-diamond DJs still listed for $10k all over Chrono24 that have been there for months with no downward movement on price.

Funny you should say that, I was surprised to see MSRP is now over $10k for a DJ. Considering the OP in either 36/41 is ~$4k less with similar characteristics (clasp, oyster, bracelet, etc).

Great watch, just not worth it at MSRP even, to me at least.

Really depends on configuration. Mine was $7,700 (36mm, steel, smooth, Jubilee, stick dial). Fluted would've added ~$1200 or so to that, so still under $10k. I don't think you get over $10k until you start going two tone or diamond. Presumably OP is talking about bog standard steel models like mine, but should probably clarify since as you said, lots of configurations do run over $10k MSRP.

A standard 41mm fluted with jubilee is 10.5k.

That price seems high to me considering the pricing of the Subs and GMT's is nearly the same.

Even the MSRP for the DJ is somewhat confusing to me. Let me be clear - it’s a classic and phenomenal watch - but I feel like you can get a lot more watch in the Rolex lineup for similar money.

That's precisely what I went off.

Have to say I was surprised. It would be hard for me to warrant $10.5k when an OP41 is $4k less. Then again, it's all jewelry. It's not supposed to make sense.

The $ difference between the DJ41 and OPs dont add up and dont make sense especially if u like the smooth oyster configuration like i do.

I just did!

Finally picked up a TT Datejust Wimbledon from my AD. They certainly don’t give ‘em away anymore!

Think about the average buyer that walks into a AD with empty display cases. The trickle down effect of the ss Professional line also is used to bolster the DJ line for dealers. When there isn’t even a DJ model in a case then they too are pushed up in their exclusivity perception.

Bought a dj 31mm fluted bezel jubilee blue dial for 9100 euros. Just another data point.

This is true.

I’d like to think I have fairly decent relationship with my AD. But, I still had to wait a couple of months for this watch! A TT Datejust for crying out loud!

The average buyer still struggles a bit to get a stainless Sports model. It’s getting better. But as far as I know, no novice buyer is walking in and getting a new stainless Daytona yet.

Why?

Time worths more than money you can pay 10-20% premium over retail if you don't want to wait and play these silly AD games.

All kinds of buyers out there. People making $50k/year buying any Rolex (absent a trust fund) is a stretch to me. But that’s fine - if someone pays $150 for a tshirt, why not pay a quarter of salary on a watch.

Some people making seven or eight figures sit on waitlists to save $3k… that is fine too. I personally know a billionaire who reuses refillable cups across multiple days. All types.

Finally, DJ are much more appealing watches to me vs some other models (subs). For me the hierarchy of preference is Daytona>DD>GMT>DJ>OP>Sub… so again, all types!

Makes sense for steel/fluted combinations that are in high demand, like blue, mint, and Wimbledon.

Also makes sense for TT models as that's pricing below retail.

Agree with the "all types" sentiment; for me the hierarchy is more or less:

DD=DJ>OP>everything else.

I just like simple clean watches that tell time and date. I have no use for other complications.

The DD should be above the DJ, but the dial options and lack of smooth bezel option on the current generation mean there isn't a model I'd spend $40k on right now, but someday the DD can and should be above the DJ in my own hierarchy, as long as the right options appear...like an olive dial with stick markers and smooth bezel on RG.

I'd expect a diamond dial DJ to be that much. Even a plain TT would easily be 12k so the Grey price isn't that far off. Supply & Demand....

People who want one will buy one.

Contrary to the latest trendy commentary on forums and YouTube’s……lots of people still want Rolex.

Do people really think watches will go back to pre covid pricing/availability? Will the stock market? Will houses? There’s been a dramatic correction to watch prices already, and while I suspect the watch market may soften slightly more in the next 3-6 months, if you want a watch (from the secondary market) it’s probably best to not try and time the bottom. Just my opinion.

I'd argue it's not the DJs that are overpriced, it's the steel sports that are underpriced based on supply/demand. Honestly the Explorer I or II is probably one 10% MSRP hike away from being readily available at ADs. That would mostly evaporate whatever little profit is left in flipping those models. Sub and GMT, maybe 2-3 such hikes away.

We live in a world where IWC thinks they can charge almost 12k for an Ingenieur and Grand Seiko almost 10k for their newer birch models. Rolex steel at MSRP are a flaming bargain, and the secondary market pricing (where supply/demand is more in cohesion) is a good example of this.

And before people say this would just raise secondary prices to match, we know that's not true. Rolex secondary prices on the whole have only dropped since their last major price hikes, due to the overall market demand.

Frankly, considering how long this supply/demand mismatch has been going on (from pre pandemic times) AND the major inflation most of the world has seen, I'm surprised Rolex hasn't been more aggressive raising prices. The Sub should be at least 12k MSRP, GMT at least 13k.

Prices and demand will return to, and ultimately exceed pre-Covid levels. When that will happen, who knows, and I suspect prices will drop further before they start rising again. But it would take a much greater mind than mine to predict the bottom, so I don’t bother trying and just do what feels right at the time.

Who's paying $13,000 for Datejusts?

Maybe a date complication adds a lot more to the price? That’s really the only difference, besides the jubilee bracelet option, and , of course, the fluted bezel, if chosen. The one I want is $8,900.00, in 36mm, so $2,600 more than my OP 36. That does seem too big a jump.
I was looking at my old messages from one of our trusted sellers, and in 2014, I paid $5750 for a 2010 serial# Back Sub date, full set. So prices have gotten crazy over he past 9 years.

For a more accurate comparison, if you compare the oyster and smooth 41mm DJ with the 41mm OP, which also features a smooth and oyster design, there's about a $1400 difference. That's a fair ask in my opinion, considering you are getting a date complication and a polished/brushed finish
