good 3rd car?

Weird one for the hive, but what are some good recommendations for a 3rd car?

Current situation:
-2 car garage, wife’s daily is in there as well as my sports car. So neither of these will be parked outside.
-3rd car will be parked in the street - lots of cats getting stolen in Priuses, rav4, CRVs, etc
-wife WFH, so rarely drives. I go into the office 2x a week. What I drive varies. Could be wife’s car, sports car, or current 3rd car.

Usage of 3rd car really is just to have an extra car. I don’t plan to drive my sports car in crap weather, not because it’ll melt or anything, but because people suck at driving as it is, throw in some “bad” weather and it turns to crap.

I’m thinking 3rd car should be more practical, say a smaller SUV.

What say you?

Go Macan. Wide price point for any budget. Lots of value. Bullet proof. Super fun to drive. Great weekend fun car. Great for road trips. Safe. Comfortable. Good tech.

Hard to beat.

Loved my Honda CRV Touring model, for long road trips. I guess it’s super popular, because my dealer called and offered me an insane amount, to trade it for my new Ridgeline, which thankfully is comfortable, has leather, and a back seat. Since we live on a 16 acre Ranch, and I’ve never owned a truck, I made the trade. I think I might miss that CRV, though.

Yeah, but don't mess around, go for the GTS - great third car.

Pretty much an identical situation for me from 2019 short of the SUV requirement. I had a breathed on MK6 Golf R:. with 400hp back then. Blew that up and went with a 2019 Civic Si. Absolutely love that car with the LSD and summer tires. Great car. The new ones are 4 doors iirc. The panels are wafer thin but it's a sub 3000lb car. Don't lean on the panels lol. My Dad had a Macan and lemoned it out. It was a very nicely optioned car though. I liked it. Maintenance was stupid. Plugs were to be done at half life of the oem platinum plugs and you had to pull a motor mount to do it. As an engineer, that bothers me. It also had optioned 21" wheels that were a B**** to get tires for at the time. They were also 275's in the back and staggered fronts. Not ideal.

Do you need three cars? With a wife that WFH and a husband that commutes two days a week?

I'd argue you don't really need two cars let alone a third.

I’d agree especially as your 3rd would be parked in street. I was going to suggest RAV4 (we had 2 & brilliant cars) but that’s one of the cars you mentioned being targeted

If it had to be an SUV - how about a Hyundai Santa Fe ? My brother in laws had one & zero issues

If it was me & I was defo after the 3rd car to save my sports car - I’d be looking at a small/ medium city car with a hatch back. Cheap to insure/ easy to park/ not something in radar for stealers / cheap to run/ get the back seats down & be amazed at what goes in.

Agree.

Parking on the street I would go Kia or Hyundai.

As a life long car enthusiast, to the extent of maintaining all my cars, BUILDING several cars, and relies on data to steer the subjective, most individuals want opinions that agree with theirs. The result is normally a “flease” or involves rollbacks on a regular basis.

That being said, for a vehicle that gets regular use, according to the industry data, there are only four brands to consider:

Toyota
Lexus
Honda
Acura

Normally aspirated
No CVT

I agree 100%, I have Maserati, Jaguar, Citroen and much more obscure makes that are a nightmare.

I’d throw in Mazda to your list.

Another vote for 4runner. Inexpensive and one of most reliable vehicles ever made. Buy it and forget it.

I agree with the usefulness factor.
If parked on the street, the pickup may have less “break-in” allure and can haul the messy stuff that homeowner life demands.

What’s in the current lineup and what’s the budget? Impossible to answer without this detail.

If you want a rugged, V8 SUV that will last forever it’s hard to beat a 100/200 series LC or GX460. As others have said the Macan is great if you want more sporty and smaller dimensions. I have a family member with a new hybrid RAV4 which is surprisingly lovely to drive… could go lots of different ways with this.

I'd go for a Lexus if you're looking for something a bit lux. I have a 2019 ES350, and while it isn't fun per se, there are few cars I can get out of after a 6 hour drive and not be sore. For the record, I'm 6'5 with major back issues.

If you're looking for an SUV, the RX is a great choice.

Woah, didn't expect this many responses. This will be a good thread!

Hopefully I answer most of the questions below.

This is a 3rd car that sits outside. I'm not parking a Macan outside to sit in the sun. But I like the thinking here! I'd likely consider an Macan EV once it's been out for a bit.

Open I guess? But needs to be reasonable. This is a 3rd car. It will be driven less than 1k miles. So it will literally sit there. The current 3rd car is getting beat up sitting in the sun. Has bird poop allover - telephone/power wires are over the top of where the car is parked. And cobwebs outside galore!

I like the truck idea! Not sure my wife could be convinced! I need to look into this as it will provide a lot of utility to haul stuff around.

I'll have to look into an Hyundai or a Mazda. Yeah the RAV/CRV seem to be getting hit left and right around here for cat thefts. At least per NextDoor.

Current fleet consist of: Model Y, 911, and an Acura TL. Friend of mine made an offer on the TL so I may just let him have it. So we'll need a "spare" car.

Currently wife goes to the office maybe 1x a quarter. I go into the office 2x a week. Rarely will that be the same day. If it is, good excuse to drive the 911. In fact, on days I go into the office, I take the Y, drop off the kid, head to the office and charge. Pick up the kid and head home.

There's been a couple of times where I'm running late, and the wife goes, "hey you picking your son up or shall I take the 911?"

Do we really need a 3rd car? Probably not, but it's a nice to have. I was originally thinking smaller SUV because it's still practical to haul things around in. Plus, can take it to Tahoe or something vs. the Y which would need a charge somewhere along the route.

The practical thing would be to purchase a used Lexus. But man, the condition of the seats I've seen are terrible. Just not quality leather. My parents had an LS, and after many years, the leather was just not good. The car was garaged, etc.

Maybe call it a day and pickup a honda civic or something. Doesn't have the SUV utility though.

I'd get a Macan, and park the Tesla on the street. Not sure I'd want a EV in the garage(battery fire), but then again I'm an idiot.

Corolla. ~$23k, great mileage, very reliable, low maintenance costs, and last damn near forever.

Is your garage big enough for a lift?

Get all 3 in there.

Then you can have something decent.
