Icon5 Thinking about buying a sub.. don't really know much

Hey guys, I'm seriously thinking about trading my DJ in towards a purchase of a sub. Thing is I really have no knowledge of submariners in regard to serial numbers, F/Z/whatever series, movement improvements/physical changes to the watch with the newer series(like lug holes vs no holes).

I dont want to buy brand new because my budget is more so around 3500-4500 dollars max. I really like the subs with rolexrolexrolex written along the rim of the dial but am not sure if those ones are the new "series" and therefore more expensive than what I am willing to spend.

If someone could help me out and sort of give me a run through of the sub and perhaps purchasing one(what to look for, best prices/best series etc) that would be a great help.

Thanks.

Davidsw is selling one on the forum that fits your budget and you should take a looky at it. Looks very clean and he is a good dealer check it out.
By the way this model does not have rolex on the rim though.

Just like Cajun said... This would seem to fit your budget. Probably the series with the RolexRolexRolex will be a bit more expensive as they are newer. But this one sure looks nice.

budget

That's a really good budget to allow you to buy a very nice used Sub and keep the DJ.

wyattearp,

Question: Why are you thinking about trading in your DJ for a Sub? The reason I ask is because I'm trying to decide between a Sub or a DJ. I was just curious. :-)

Rolexnovice. Im thinking about going for the sub because with sport model watches you have many easy options for alternate bracelets/straps. Nato, rubber, oyster, jubilee etc all of which look great. Plus I think that the rotating bezel would be very useful/amusing .

And you can't beat the sub for classic Rolex style. If it were up to me to have only two watches it would be a DJ and a sub.

Hey Wyatt,Im no exspert on Rolex watchs and cant really tell you much, but,I can tell you that the Rolex that surrounds the rim is not really that noticable.Good luck in whatever direction you choose.

I am thinking about doing the same thing. I have a BNIB stainless DJ, stickers still all over the watch still and with the RolexRolex engraving and the watch has never seen daylight. Not nuts about it and think I'm going to end up going for the TT sub.

If you go grey (maybe even some ADs), you can get a no-date brand new for the upper end of that range, especially if the DJ is on top of that.

Contact one of several trusted members in the for sale section for details. There are BNIB subs going for $4750

Imho

IMHO you would want to get a Sub with box and papers. The sub is a darn tough watch that can take anything you can throw at it and still look great if you need to wear it with a suit. Make sure to get it serviced every 5-7 years because it's a machine and it needs some TLC and oil and replacement of worn parts every once in a while. Think about it, a modern Rolex movement beats at 28,800 per hour, so over 7 years it beats 1 billion 766 million times....WITHOUT FAIL. Give it a good servicing and it will do that for decades to come and it will do so in style. Cheers and good luck with your search.

I believe the engraved rehaut (rolexrolexrolex engraving) came out late in the M series, so it would have to be relatively new. With that you get the no holes case, and solid end links.

Good luck with your search.

actually the rolexrolexrolex engraving started at Basel with F series, mid 2003, but wasn't released right away. You started to see if with Z series. Some Z's had it and some didn't. M series is when they started doing the rehaut engraving on every Rolex made.

Aaaargh

Not a fan of the ROLEX on the rehaut. I went for a pre owned Y serial Sub instead...and loving it.

It makes the dial look very busy IMHO.

Wyattearp,

I agree with you. The Sub shows the fine line between classic Rolex 'brand name' style and class. It is also sturdy enough to last the ages. The Datejust 2 is another beauty as well but this is more of a dress watch and may look a little out of place with some swim trunks, or very casual wear. The Sub looks good no matter what. IMO
