Would you rather have 3-4 watches vs 1 heavy hitter?

Question goes. For instance : $90k+ retail with tax on a platona vs 2 PM Daytonas cost the same. Which would you go for? Me personally would like many vs having 1 hard one say 100k plus. Eventually the hard one is gonna come I'ma have all 3 Daytonas figuratively. I think some of us buy , wear and "trade up" , and Some view something like SS GMT not a quality piece so they get traded into something more expensive. I don't look at it that way. So far most of my pieces marks something or have a cool lil story behind it. I don't see myself selling them ever, Id just accumulate more pieces.

I totally get where you're coming from, It's all about personal preference and what brings you joy. Having a variety of watches can be exciting, especially when each piece holds a special meaning or story. And hey, who says you can't have it all? As long as you're enjoying your collection and creating memories along the way, that's what matters most. Keep rockin' those timepieces!

It depends where on the cost scale we’re at.

$10,000 Range - I’d rather have one Rolex Submariner than 3 or 4 cheaper watches.

Once we get to $20,000, then definitely at least 2 watches.

$50,000 and higher - I’d rather have 3 or 4 nice watches.

Depends on so many factors. lifestyle.

1 heavy hitter at 40$k range (day date) is a ln amazing feel, then buy an Omega speedy for daily/sport or a Cartier steel.

I currently prefer having several pieces to choose from rather than just one, but I could see myself consolidating down into one heavy hitter someday. I guess time will tell!

Obviously different peoples cost range is different.
I'd say for me 10k plus is normal range for a watch I would buy that just because it's Wednesday if my Rolex AD offer me one. 30k - 50k is a pretty considerable amount for a purchase . I'm currently working my way up the ladder with my AD to get to the ones I want.
Heavy hitter for me would be 80k -120k. If I have to spend more then 150k on a watch. It would not be rational. I can use money better.

Before I buy the AP openwork. It'd like to have all the ones I like now. I rather have 1 PM dayonta plus 3 other SS Rolex then get the AP skeleton later

Depends like everyone said. I’d rather have one openworked Royal oak versus a sub, gmt, and day date

But I might rather have one sub, gmt, and Daytona versus one steel RO jumbo

Given if the Jumbo is at retail. I'd put it with Daytona category. But my real question is Would you rather have just 1 AP skeleton at grey market vs Daytona+ jumbo+ sub+ GMT ?

I would rather have 3-4 watches then be married to a heavy hitter.

3 or 4 instead of one expensive hitter.
“Less” is not “more” in this case.
I appreciate to wear a watch all the time (except sleeping) Big cities in Europe and expensive hitters is bad company.
Therefore a reasonable cheaper watch gives piece of mind while visiting mentioned cities.

Quality over quantity IMO. For myself personally, I’d like to keep my collection relatively small (less than 10), so I’m aiming for 7-10 PM pieces and 1-3 SS pieces.
Everyone has different goals/tastes/collection ideas. I’m really glad we don’t all have the same thoughts….that’s what makes life fun/interesting.

I’m in the buy a few rather than one camp. Having one watch @50K would scare me, I would be afraid to wear it outside of the house.
Currently have a collection of 8 with the most expensive being a TT Sub. Even then I don’t wear that one everywhere and never without long sleeves while out on the streets.

What the hell is a heavy hitter they are all just watches yes some cost more but they all only have one function to tell the time on the wrist.Unless you are one of those who goes around with a sticker on forehead hey look at me I am wearing a very very Expensive Rolex buy what you like and want to wear not the price. .

I like variety. I don't take cost into account. I occasionally go through phases of considering consolidation but so far I've come out on the side of variety. I don't know what a "heavy hitter is".

It depends a lot on the budget you can afford...however, in my case I realized over the years that I'm not the kind of guy that changes watch every week...once I like it, it stays on my wrist for long, I end up wearing always the same one or two watches, hence I learnt to value quality over quantity.

Quality over Quantity. This year I have traded in watches not getting much wrist time for 2 PM Daytona’s that I enjoy way more. They get much more wrist time than the watches traded in ever saw. 6 for 2.

Quality over quantity within reason for me.

For me it’s simply about owning what I like, so if I really like something that’s “cheap” I wouldn’t be selling it for something more expensive. Plus I have a limit with what I actually feel comfortable wearing out and about, and these days it’s about £20k. I don’t see the point of me owning something that would sit in the safe.

So I’m more than happy having a collection of sub-£20k pieces that I really enjoy.

I wouldn't trade 2 PM Daytonas for a platinum. No way.

This isn't a quality over quantity deal. The quality is equal and you own half as much of it.

Platinum isn't more precious than gold. It's an expensive industrial metal used in catalytic converters and wires. Pt950 has more of the stuff in it than the 18K gold but Gold is the multi-thousand-year reigning king of precious metal money.

I’m your specific example, I’d rather have one watch, as I wouldn’t want 3 of the same reference.:2,

Personally, I prefer having a variety of different references to choose from

I think the ideal combination is 1 heavy hitter and 1 ss daily

In my case I have a rg daytona and a ss Pepsi

You can cover the same ground with a few PM models as one expensive model. Small collection, quality and ones I really like. In the real world, for me, I want them all.

I think the stage of collecting also matters. When you are earlier in the game, wearing different watches from different brands helps you find out what you actually like.

Later, I think concentrating on a smaller number of higher end watches is a natural progression.

Since i am not a fan of 100% PM watches, a true heavy hitter PM model isn;t in my consideration set. A TT version yes - and I have a 116523 daytona that scratches that itch currently

One thing to keep in mind long term is servicing costs. Very annoying dropping $700-1000 every time your $3-5k watch needs a service. I’d much rather have 2-3 really nice ones that are worth taking care of long term
