covered name on warranty paper

recently purchased a rolex watch (yr 2000) on the grey market from reputable dealer however the warranty paper had the owners name covered with white out. Why is this? thanks in advance

It is used, not Grey.

The owners name or other personal information is protected by law from unlawful disclosure. (US Privacy Laws)

A reputable dealer should white out or otherwise obscure any previous owner information for their protection and to ensure their privacy concerns.

Well seeing the warranty is well out of date makes no matter what the name was on it as now it's just a outdated bit of paper.

If the watch is still under warranty, altering the warranty paperwork in any way may void the warranty. I would prefer watches which have papers, to have those papers unaltered.

I agree of course, Peter.

Wouldn’t it have been pretty, though, if the paper was untainted and the first owner’s name was Paul Newman?

Very common to white out name upon resale. Even if the watch was still under warranty (which it obviously isn’t) it wouldn’t matter one bit.

Out of curiosity, was the warranty paper originally from Japan (country code 410)? I seem to see a lot of White Out or even the name cut out from warranty papers originating there.

can't you just scratch off or remove white out from paper?

Yes, I can see that happening with most watchmakers. My Grand Seiko had an issue with timekeeping, so I sent it to GS US just before the warranty expired. They emailed me, requesting a photo of the warranty paper, which is why I took the photo I posted earlier. Thankfully, Grand Seiko didn’t even ask or make a fuss about the alteration; they fixed everything and more under warranty. I say "more" because they actually replaced all of the bracelet screws that were mangled from the previous owner trying to unscrew them without melting the loctite first
