Can someone tell me about Panerai?

There’s alot of love for Panerai and I never understood it. The watches feel bloated and the dials feel very basic but the brand gets alot of love.

I even once bought my father a Panerai for fathers day because I knew he loved it and wanted one.

Can someone please fill me in on why its such a loved brand.

Style and fashion. Easy to read dial. Lots of strap choices (and perhaps bracelet) so there's a lot of possibilities. They do make an excellent table clock.

A few years ago it was a CULT. As well as a Stallone/Arnold groupie thing. And probably a major influence on the oversized watches era.

Huge dedicated following. I remember the Paneristi forums and clubs all over the world that had get togethers and people flying into other cities to join in on the activities.

People getting Panerai tattoos......it was a major thing.

These days it's quieted down somewhat although they still make some nice clean watches and are toning down the size a bit as well.

The massive number of models essentially that looked all the same was a bit confusing. And the price was pretty high.

There is a lot of history and heritage to the brand, which over the last 10 years has seemed to have gone a bit awry. However it is very distinctive and unique design. They wear very well and are beautiful on wrist.
I am glad they are toning down the size, but pricing seems to be a joke atm

To me the fun with Panerai is how easy it is to change straps and all the custom straps available.
Ive had a few, my 243J is the only one I still have, wish I didn't sell my 87D

I’ve never owned one, but would like to someday. Part of the appeal to me is a 45-47mm watch. It’s their thing. I know they’re sizing things down lately, which is fine, but if/when I get one it’ll likely be a 47mm. They’re just cool!

I have two a 933 and 1068. Both blue, both 42, both easy to wear - not BAW stuff. I like those two a lot.

Nothing feels like a Panerai when you wear it. Sadly I had to sell 2 of my 3 this year, but blessed I could keep one. You either get it or not.

The Luminor has the most unique and iconic design in the watch space. Nothing, nothing looks like it. They are comfortable and can be used in dressed-down attire, or a simple two-minute strap change will make it ready for formal wear with a suit. I always need one in the collection.

If you want a large watch, a Panerai or IWC Big Pilot is probably the way to go. Large watches have sort of fallen out of favor, though I'd argue it's nice to have watches of all different sizes.

Panerai has a bloated, overpriced collection which has largely turned me off to the brand. That said, there are many models that can still be easily obtained that are fantastic representations of the base DNA of the brand.

For large watches I have a Bovet, Louis Moinet and Dietrich and all 3 are sexier then a Panerai. Personally if I wanted another big watch I’d go for HYT

original and unique design. legible and defined style.

avoid the pitfalls:
stay away from LEs.

double check the WR ratings. noticed some of the newer models are fitted with only 30m WR. this is just ridiculous.

buy basic and avoid overpriced options.

enjoy all of the strap options

So I jumped on this PAM, the 627. Just enough Panerai, plus some compelling complications and design aesthetics.

Was looking at a 233, but decided on this model instead. Glad I did

Hasn't been off the wrist in 4 weeks, the 116710LN sits lonely on the winder.

And my strap drawer has grown exponentially
