Question on the Oyster Perpetual

I am considering placing my name on the wait list for an Oyster Perpetual silver dial.
Initially I considered the green, however, upon seeing the green dial in the metal, it's underwhelming with the matt finish, whereas I was expecting a metallic green finish.

I've 5 watches with blue dials, so no more blue !

The OP is the lowest on the Rolex rung and there's no guarantee I'll get it and wanted to find out the thoughts on this watch in terms of where it fits in and competes for formal dress watches.

Anything else in this price range I should be considering ?

It's a great watch that works in any situation, including dress. Silver dial is very versatile and I'd expect it shouldn't be too tough to get.

The OPs are tough to get - esp in 41mm.

My preference is the 41mm. Considering the subtle dial design and "fine" bezel surround, the larger size brings out the watches aesthetics.
It's no easier to obtain it seems as there's a waiting list for this too.
The AD recommended I look at the Explorer which commands a price premium which like the OP doesn't have a date complication and is a smaller diameter.
Whys the GMT that more expensive than and OP ? Is it because it's more rugged ?

Due to their price point, the 41mm OP's can be a little harder to to obtain at the AD's. With that said, the silver and black dial would be easiest to source and most versatile in my opinion. Good luck OP!

I have 3 36mm OP's. Not the silver. I think it is a great everyday watch. You can also look at Omega Aqua Terra as well. Same price point but you can get a bit of a discount with Omega. I prefer the OP though.

I have two OP41s in green and coral red. Nothing formal about these colors, I bought them because most people don’t realize they are a Rolex. They are very rugged and get a lot of wear.
The silver dial you seek would have all of the rugged and go anywhere qualities that mine have but with a more formal classic dial. I could see it or a black dial being used as a “dress watch.”
The toughest part of getting one from an AD is that with so many colors and sizes available, even the biggest dealers will have a wait for a specific one. Good luck though, at MSRP they are a bit of a bargain for Rolex and anyone who looks down on them for being “entry level” hasn’t been around for long.

Great choice! You can certainly use it as a dress watch. BTW, it is absolutely stunning IRL. I waited a full year to get my 36. It was well worth it.

OPs are great and go with everything, especially in a smaller size. Depends on what your definition of "formal dress" is. If you're looking for a formal watch, there are better options for less money, IMO.

Agree there are other options. For some reason, I perceive the Oyster Perpetual as the "trailblazer" Rolex - like the first so there's a bit of historic value.
On the subject of value, how do these hold value compared with the sports models ?
The Crown at the 12 position is a neat touch !

For formal dress silver dial with gold hands and markers is fine but I wouldn’t buy that version because it’s not versatile. Too fussy for me.

OPs may be lowest in price but not in desirability at AD.

I prefer the green to the silver, easily.

That’s an unusual take, on the silver dial OP. I chose it, because it IS the most versatile, of all the OP colors. In fact, It may be the best GADA watch, in the entire Rolex catalogue.

I’m happy you’re enjoying your choice.

White gold hands and indices on that model would make it versatile and GADA, using yellow gold instead makes it too fussy for me.

What do you mean by “too fussy”? The slight contrast is too much? If that Is what you mean, it is the contrasting yellow gold hands, indices, and coronet, which makes it so special. In Rolex Ads for the new OP line, it was the silver dial variant, which was most prominently featured. They knew it was striking.

Thanks for clarifying. I really do appreciate it. It’s Interesting that the very details you call fussy are what makes it stand out, in the lineup, in a good way, IMO. I wish they had gone one step further, and put a gold winding crown on it. I suppose I could change that out.
