The first Submariner with date. The 1680 is one of my favorite references and this one displays my favorite features in vintage watches.

I love unique patina and I think it’s what makes vintage so appealing to most of us.

The dial here has aged to a toasted marshmallow like tone. A little more toasted and warmer near the edges of the indices and a creamy hue closer to the center. The hands have turned into a darker whiskey shade. In this era of Rolex, the hands and dials were produced in different factories which in turn creates this contrasting patina (most of the time). My favorite detail on the hands are when they show some slight oxidation on the steel. It reminds me of underwater shipwrecks. The insert has faded into a gunmetal greyish blue. Wild to think this same insert used to be deep black. Maybe a reminder to wear your sunscreen out there.

I’m a huge fan of the bevels of these older vintage models. It adds some form and intricacy to the case profile we don’t see in the modern Rolex sports models in production today. I’ll let those chamfers speak for themselves.
