5402 at the park!
While i love the modern variants, there is just something about the older Jumbo's that I love! Extremely comfortable and the old school font is charming.
Happy Sunday all! |

I'd like a 5402 one day, but they have obviously been quite cost prohibitive for many in the last few years. I'm not sure where to start my research and which serial to purchase to have the right balance between value/price and historical prestige (like an A serial) |

AP pricing has taken a hit and continues to fall. While still pricey, they have come down significantly from the peak. |

As agsstructures mentioned, there are two 5402 dials. There's the "AP @ 6" dial from the first design and the "AP @ 12" modified dial design (created after the hands would sometimes crash into the applied AP logo and get stuck). A & B series are going to have the first dial, C is a mix and D probably mostly has the later dial. The original dial layout is considered more desirable.
But that's not the whole story since many watches of that age have had their original dials replaced. If an A series had a dial was replaced in the 80s it was probably fitted with an AP @ 12 dial. Later they started making service dials in the original layout (AP @ 6), but with "Swiss Made" at the bottom instead of "Swiss". So a C series with an original "Swiss" only dial might fetch more than an A series with a replaced dial, etc. Technically an original "AP @ 12" dial with "Swiss" only is the rarest original steel dial, although the dial layout itself is considered less desirable than AP @ 6 so the pricing doesn't necessarily reflect the scarcity. As far as other differences, those are much more obscure. Some 5402 clasps say "AP" while others say "Audemars Piguet". The original boxes had some variation (metal vs. non-metal), etc. The original crowns were unsigned. |

Beautiful! I always love the original 5402 "Swiss only" AP @ 6 dial.

The date wheel font really stands out and gives it character.
