Carl Weathers, prolific actor famous for ‘Rocky’ and ‘The Mandalorian,’ dead at 76

Carl Weathers, who came to fame as Apollo Creed in the “Rocky” movies and proceeded to appear in dozens of movies and TV shows from “Predator” to “The Mandalorian,” has died, according to his manager Matt Luber. Weathers was 76.

The actor “died peacefully at home” on Thursday, Luber told CNN. No cause of death was available.

“Carl was an exceptional human being who lived an extraordinary life,” his family said in a statement provided to CNN. “Through his contributions to film, television, the arts and sports, he has left an indelible mark and is recognized worldwide and across generations. He was a beloved brother, father, grandfather, partner, and friend.”

He was great in Happy Gilmore with Adam Sandler.

What a great actor and class act. Obviously he will always be known for his role as Creed but I was excited when they brought him in to Mandalorian. It was great to see a big name talented actor buying into small screen Star Wars.

Rest in Peace sir. Thank you for years of entertainment.

Had the proverbial 'cup of coffee' in the early 70's with the Oakland Raiders playing for John Madden.

Such a natural talent. I think he was a natural comic, on top of every other skill.

Side note. My first thought "He was fifteen years older than me".

This started when Ray Loitta died at 59, I was 60.

Does anyone else INSTANTLY do this calculation? I never did it before Ray when I was 60.

Perspective.

So sad, I enjoyed watching him in a variety of roles growing up. He loved his work on Mandalorian and even directed a few episodes. Rest easy Champ.

As a person who fancies himself a movie lover, wanted to say I found his work in the original Rocky film, terrific. He was playing an Ali-like character but didn't just slip into an impression. He made Apollo Creed an interesting character with two separate personas, a real one and one for the public. Thought it a fairly complex portrayal, especially for a supporting role. That it was his first 'real' role only served to make it that much more impressive.

Really saddened by this - grew up with the Rocky movies and just loved what he did with that character. Truly gifted actor and person. RIP.

Sorry to hear this. He always lit up the screen. I hadn’t realized he was an NFL player.
