What is it with ppl and their hate *RANT*
This is a reason I choose not to venture out onto other boards much, with a few exeptions of course. Read a few threads elsewhere today and honestly felt sick after reading.
Why is it that ppl that claim to be Watch enthusiats feel the need to find something wrong with other ppl's choice of watches and bash them for it. I really hate it when ppl feel the need to put down other brands without a good reason and usually without experience. Here are some examples I am pretty sure we have all heard: Rolex VS Others. Rolex has history and great resale value compared to brand XYZ. Other brands are crap blah blah blah. Last I heard Rolex isnt the oldest company nor is it the only one with a history of participating in major historical events. Resale value? If you take the fact that other brands get a discount off of MSRP to begin with the resale value is not that bad. Example brand XYZ you get 30% off when new and can sell for about 60% of MSRP is not to far off from SS Rolexes being bought at MSRP and sold for about 80%. When you look at it like that you arent losing much on many watches out there. Omega vs Rolex. Rolex is garbage because they are overpriced and everyone who has a Rolex is an a$$ blah blah. Ok so what about the people who own both. Rolex owners should smarten up and stop wasting their money (yes I was told this on numerous occasions on another board when I posted a pic of my SMP and SD together) Panerai Vs others. Stop wearing girls watches. I dont want to wear XYZ brand because its too flashy (and a 44mm watch on a 5.5 inch wrist isnt? ) I think you guys get my point? I really dont get all the hate, I can find something wrong with almost every brand but I can also find something good about every brand. Example, I love Rolexes but Panerai makes great looking 40mm (I got girly wrists for a fat guy) with a AWESOME BRACELET!!!!! I hate to admit it but the Railmaster looks better than the Exp1 imo even though I love the Exp1. Its like everywhere I look there are always haters that seem to ruin it for everyone. I am glad we have this place to hang out hats where we welcome all watches. Kudos to everyone here on TRF. You guys impress me with your love for all things. |

I agree you read a lot of rants like the ones you listed above on watch sites. In fact, on one site recently, a gentleman who posts regularly on the site had a bad experience with warranty repair of a new dive watch he purchased. So when people asked everyone for their opinions and experiences with the brand, he would give his take and tell people he sold his watches from them. Many people at the same time posted having a positive opinion and experience with that same brand. Sounds like real life, right? After all, no company makes perfect products all the time and sometimes they drop the ball on service as well. Anyway, even though this guy just reported his experience like all the others, this particular brand had him banned from the forum to prevent him from continuing to respond to questions about the brand.
There are many who hold unreasoned opinions based on incomplete experiences and a lack of real appreciation for the art of watchmaking. We are living during a time when there are a lot of really great watch companies making innovative mechanical watches. So there are a lot of new watches out there right now for us to be happy about. Rolex and Omega are both high selling mechanical watch brands and both have an excellent record of making fine watches. Yet when people decide to pick sides, the truth that both are great brands gets lost. I think that we should help each other by posting the truth about the watches we own, whether you are having a great experience or a bad one. It seems to me we all learn when someone alerts us to an apparently faulty movement, etc. If the manufacturer is smart, they realize it helps them also to learn as fast as possible that something they are producing is not quite right. But what I think all of us should keep in mind is a sense of emotional balance, honesty, and courtesy towards all. Just because one person thinks Omega is better than Rolex or vice versa doesn't mean everyone feels the same way. Your opinions about a brand can also be told in a polite manner, even if you have to say that a particular watch isn't working out for you. Good topic. |

Not only on watch forums of course but a good point. I’m sure this whole (predominantly male) world of choices must be one big play ground for psychologists. The watches we crave are usually, but not always, priced above average and the purchase itself represents a big step and makes a statement. It’s YOUR choice. I still remember the infamous Walt Odets article about the venerable Explorer. Wow, that rippled the pond to put it mildly. The Explorer owners and many in the Rolex community felt personally attacked and for a short period he was the most hated man on earth. I’ve read his article over and over and tried to look upon it as objective as possible. The problem with reviews is that they are mostly a still picture, a snap shot. Scientifically they aren’t worth much but they carry a heavy load because of the message. I’d rather have him test 10 Explorers than that one.
To get back to the choice: no one likes his choice being criticized because with that, you are criticized as well. And many gain strength by putting someone else (or his choice) down. You would think that grown men who can afford $4000+ watches were beyond that kind of behavior but they are not. And yes, the internet creates a sense of anonymity. I’m sure if those men would meet face to face in the right surrounding it would be different. I hope that I myself have reached a point in life where I have left all of this behind me. To have found mental balance and inner strength so that I don’t need all of this anymore. Still a long way to go but now I try to concentrate on other, more important things. But it’s hard and especially in my line of work I’m tested each and everyday.

The fact that this thread has been taken so seriously and no one has screamed bloody murder about the examples I made, makes this place about as perfect as it can be in cyberspace.

Well my friend, I think TRF is just the name of our local pub! A mere watch forum it is not. We can discuss just about anything, our beloved watches are just the common denominator. Yes Roger, TRF is special. A big bunch of fitting miss-fits. P.S. Do you wanna be bashed?

Excellent points, Roger. I have at least four different brands of watches that I wear on a regular basis, and like them all. Yes, my PERSONAL favorites are my three Rollies, but I believe tolerance for all brands is the way to go. One should wear what one wants, and the opinions of others are just that - opinions.

I think partially some of these turkeys do it just to get a response.
We have had the odd one around here, show up, try to ruffle some feathers & then slink away. BTW, this is a great bar to hang around in. So far my "bar tab" is very low. It is the other addictions that are getting up there. BUT, we all enjoy the pictures, the stories etc etc, so no harm done yet

I think a lot of people who visit watch forums aren't true WIS's rather, they're specific brand enthusiasts. Thus the blind devotion and aggressively defending ONE brand and refusing to find the good points of others.

Well put Roger, very well put.
If someone loves watches it shouldn't matter whether they have 50 rolex or 1 swatch. Communities shouldn't be about ownership, they are about enjoying a collective interest. That's why I think think place is great. There's plenty of member who don't even have a rolex (ahem....) and yet nothing derogatory is ever said about them. While everybody loves a good boost to the ego, I don't agree with those who practice 'oneupmanship'. I also agree with Frans.. you would think that successful, educated people are above this sort of behaviour. So, let me say this.... there is more than one way of measuring success.... That's why this place is great. TRF is more than just a forum, it's a community. (oh god....advertising jargon again... why can't I stop!)

Good post, Roger. Yes, I love Rolex the MOST in the whole world, but I do respect, admire and appreciate the marvels of other brands out there.
For me, it will always be Rolex first and last, but I can drool over other brands too!! Cheers - JJ

Good post Roger.
I was telling Craig last week on the phone that I don't consider my a WIS anymore, a fan for sure, but not worried about the movement etc... I am happier being a Paneristi and TRFite than anything else. Like so many guys say on the Pannie boards, the watches bring us, the people keep us coming back.

Without Rolex? Let me think? It has been about 7 months and I seem to be surviving. I did have a hankering for an LV, something about that watch does it for me. But like the flu, it passed. I seriously think I will pick up one of those in the not too distant future though.

Don't hold your breath, I am working on a 40mm PAM for Andie that she really wants in addition to the three I have now. So another watch purchase for me barring a flip won't be until next spring. Between now and then the LV could be out and replaced with the Memovox again, I love that watch.
