story of my 1680 red
hi guys
thought you might like to hear how i came by my red sub............. after three years of dealing with my home insurance broker i was sat at his desk and i glanced at his wrist i thought like looks like an old rolex so when i had concluded my home insurance re-newal, i asked is that a rolex you are wearing he replied yes it is, i asked if i may look at it, i was gob smacked when he handed it to me and i saw the RED submariner on the dial and even though the plexi was really scratched (he was a keen diver and still used it when diving amazing i think considering what it looks like now) i could see the dial and hands were mint. i asked how long have you had it he told me he had bought it new in the seventies i could not believe i had known this guy three years and not noticed his watch before. and he was the original owner. the reason he bought the watch was he had failed his driving test and was so pissed off that he went and spent the money he had saved up for his first car on a rolex submariner because that was the watch that james bond had! he told me that his parents were not best pleased with his purchase. so i asked if wanted to sell it he was unsure i badgered him for 18 months. i told him to check the internet so he could compare my offer with what red subs were selling for. he kept saying maybe. so one day i walked into his office with a brand new sea dweller and a wad of cash. he then gave in.few!!!! once the watch was mine it was imediatly despatched to rolex bexley via my local AD for a service and bracelet restoration. (the 9315 is by far the most comfortable steel bracelet i have ever worn it simply molds itself to your wrist!) total cost for service and bracelet repair was £430.00 a lot of beer tokens i am sure you will agree, but worth every penny in my eyes to keep the watch as original as possible. of course when the watch was sent for service i gave instructions not to change the dial, hands, date wheel or bezel insert. the only thing on the watch different to when it was made is the triple lock crown rolex always make this upgrade when they service older subs. i fogot to say i just got the watch on its own some two months later the guy rang me to say he was in his loft and he had found a box and some papers and a silly little anchor i was so excited a little bit of wee came out. by far the best piece of paper was a valuation letter from the AD with matching dealer stamp as the warranty paper. get this, value in december 1976 £296.00 we would all have red subs if they cost this much now!!!!!!! sorry to rant on but its my watch and you guys know how we all get about our watches..... |
