Lucky to not have lost my Daytona
Recently, I was fishing in a remote part of Quebec. It was very cold and my outer layer was a shell with velcro wrist straps. At the end of the day, I returned to my room and took off my shell at which point my watch flopped off my wrist and fell. A pin in the strap somehow came loose. i was very lucky that my shell had velcro straps or my watch could have ended up at the bottom of the lake.

Get a beater watch when camping or out in the woods, on the boat…

What kind of strap did you have your watch on?

Wow... sounds like contraction of the steel at cold temps could have contributed to the loosening of the bracelet screw. Scary!

Had this happen on my BLNR - luckily on the couch. Need to take it to AD and get lock tire on the link screws - and check it periodically

I fish a LOT. I refuse to wear my Rolex or other high dollar watches when fishing. I fear one will come off during a cast and I’ll watch it disappear. Most other stuff is fine but losing one altogether at the bottom of a lake is a real fear.

I flyfish for Atlantic Salmon ~2/year and don't wear Rolexes in the water but we were trolling and I thought I was safe.

Lucky to not have lost my Daytona
My watches are insured, but I dont take a lot of unnecessary risk if I dont have to - but, if I lose one I know Im covered.
Am I missing something? And, why would I take an unnecessary risk w/o insurance, or better yet - why wouldnt I wear my Ares or Seiko if I thought I might chance losing one on a fishing trip? I have a pretty broad collection and unless it was an EDC that I was committed to wearing everyday and not worried about losing it, then I’d wear something less expensive when on an expedition. Wear what you want, when you want. But be insured and manage your risk. |

Lucky it was cold enough for that extra layer.
Was the screw in the sleeve too? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro

Should have asked the forum “is it safe to fish in my Daytona” …

Fishermen gotta fish with their 20k wrist watch! Kind of like the people who have to golf while wearing their GMT.

Lucky to not have lost my Daytona
I wouldn’t class any of my watches as beaters, I only have a few pieces and I’m certainly not flush with money. The key for me is insurance. I get immense enjoyment from wearing my watches, no matter what I’m doing. I’ve been camping with my Daytona and swimming/on board boats with my AP Diver. The only time I’ve thought twice about wearing a watch is when visiting central London (rare for me as I live up North) and that’s from a personal safety perspective. Some treasure their watches by keeping them pristine and in top condition, I treasure mine by wearing them and creating memories with them along life’s journey. No right or wrong. Edited to add: P.S. glad your watch escapes safe and well OP Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Just fix the bracelet with a bit of loctite. Some of the intent and enjoyment of Rolex is sort of an everywhere and anything type watch. No reason for a beater, just fix it wear and enjoy. Glad you didn’t lose it in that instance though.

Daytona is about as expensive as I can afford - I got it grey market. Glad you can hit your hard. Thinking about picking up Tudor Pelagos or old Speedmaster hesalite as a beater for me... It's all perspective - My Daytona is my jewelry watch and I am not ashamed to say it. Got my Daytona as part of a His/Her set.

I don’t call any of my watches beaters, just some cost more than others. My Rolex go everywhere and do whatever I’m doing.
OP, glad your jacket snagged it! I’ve had screws start backing out a few times but never had one fall off. Always noticed it before that happened. |

A few years ago I was throwing a cast net for bait, threw my old Seiko skx007 right off my wrist into thirty feet of water in a flowing river. Oops! In that brief second as I watched it sail away it looked like the the bracelet just came loose on one end. Cheap watch that it was, it had taken a beating for a long time and I loved that old watch. I've worn my sub every day since I got it in Feb, and I've fished two or three days every week, often throwing a net. But I bought it to wear. it is insured though.
