Help me decide on my 18th Birthday Rolex!

Hi all,

My auntie has decided to buy me a Gold Rolex for my 18th Birthday next year on the terms that I clean her car for a year! I'm trying to pursuade her to get the watch this year ( so she doesn't have to pay more because of price increases) and to keep it until i'm 18!

Anyway, I'm having trouble deciding which Rolex I should get! I've narrowed them down to three, the Submariner 116618, the GMT-Master IIc 116718 LN or the Day-Date II 218238. So, which one would you choose and why?

Well not a lover of any precious metal watches,so I would save your Aunt some money. And have a watch in S.steel possibly a GMT a very versatile watch

At 18 years of age I would say the GMT, I love the DD but I think it is a bit of an older mans watch! Oh yes, you have gotta go green dial IMHO!
Your a lucky chap, all I got from my Aunt for my 18th was a bar of Chocolate

All of those are watches which might be considered a bit old for you - IMHO. But hey, if you dig them, go for it.

GMT gets my vote, I don't like the blues, I find those songs depressing.

Great question:

You can't go wrong withe the Submariner (any dail, date or no date). I've said it before and I'll say it again, almost every member on this board (who wears a Rolex) either owned a Submariner (of some sort) or owns one currently. It is the iconic model and some would say its the most popular. The Sub (gold or stainless steel) looks good one anyone regardless of age, casual dress or formal.

GMT II is great for time zone usuage. As a young guy you will probably want to travel the world, get into adventures and venture out, so the simultaneous time zone usage would be useful. Plus it looks great.

The Day-Date II- In my opinion (as a 25 year old) is too much of an old man watch. Granted many presidents have worn one (with Jubilee braclet). Plus you will become an old man hopefully, so maybe that could work for you!!!

Why not a Daytona??

I voted for the GMT, but...

I'm personally of the opinion that you'd either be better served by a SS watch or, if it must be gold, a white gold watch. Yellow gold isn't something that a lot of 18 year olds/young people wear anymore (white gold or platinum for precious metals is more popular these days, at least over on this side of the pond), and you have many really awesome options in SS and WG (SS-Sub, SS-GMT, Daytona... the WG Daytona in particular is REALLY nice looking, esp. with the black dial and red markers).

But to each their own. If YG is what you like, then out of those 3 I'd choose the GMT.

you already have quite a collection...
go for one that you're missing. i love the GMTIIc. IMHO, at 18yr of age, you'll probably fit better with SS In the end, it's a personal choice.

PS/ does yr aunt need any other cars washed?

Cheers!

I would go with YG Submariner, personally.

My friend has been enjoying his since he was 18

Depends on your style, though. If you are a bit more "dressy" of a person the DD could be fine. I myself went this route because sporty, if you had 1000 words to describe me, would probably be 998th. There is no age limit or requirement on watches, I myself am in my early 20's. Get what you like! And congrats on surviving 18 years

Plus your name is SubmarinerMan. It'd be a pain to change it to GMTMan

Since you prefer the SS, maybe you can compromise with your Auntie and get a SS GMT now, and she can get you a YG Day-Date on your 30th birthday. It would be a waste if she got you a YG now, and you didn't really feel like wearing it too much.

Hang on a mo.

Call me a cynic but have you considered the possibility that she is trying to get one year's worth of car valeting from you free of charge.

Get it in writing or make sure you get to keep the watch while it is in storage for your forthcoming birthday.

Also, I would suggest the WG Daytona with the meteorite dial instead of the other options.
