Input Requested: Submariner Date ‘Vintage Single Red' 1680

All,

Looking for help from this group on a watch I am considering, but a few things don't seem to add up.

Rolex Oyster Perpetual Submariner Date Stainless Steel ‘Vintage Single Red’ 1680

I'm trying to figure out it is listed as a 1978, but I believe the last Red dials were produced in 1975? It appears it is a Mark VI dial and I'm just trying to place the actual year or provenance in case anyone here can help. It looks like the fat font bezel was replaced with a thin font one at some point as well and I can't quite tell if it's been re-lumed or if the pip has been replaced.

Any help appreciated and many thanks in advance.

.
So much unanswered based on this ad.
The reference to 1978 could be the sold date.

Obviously need partial serial to begin..

The lumes look a bit grubby, not very appealing to me. Hand lumes don't match the dial, but that can happen. Service insert and pip. Crown guard looks a bit over polished. Spring bars are just sticking through the lugs, might be wrong spring bars or possibly well polished lugs. I'm 100% not sure about the box, others will no doubt comment. Not a 100% disaster but I think you could do better

Yep, lot of questions left based on just this ad. Got to have first couple of serial to date as you prob know.

To be sure- service insert, later bracelet. Dial/hands ok imo. Case def polished and lugs a bit thinned.

Great resource

Great help, thanks fellas and appreciate the quick input. There were some things that just weren't adding up and seems like one to possibly stay away from.

Any other leads on a 1978 reference 1680 or 5512 (5,000,000 serial) with box & papers in good condition would be welcome.

also, why do you need a 1978? Birth year? If you have to pick one, would you rather have a prime example of a different year or an inferior birth year watch?

Check these out:

Pigeon holing yourself into a crappy example just to get birth year is not a smart move

Thanks fellas, it's more sentimental and memory of a loved one than an investment.
