Thoughts on the Oyster Perpetual 1500?

I'm looking at possibly picking up a vintage OP "Date" 1500 for my wife. Looking for a Rolex for a person who's not into watches. In other words, she will probably throw it on the dresser when not wearing with little to no concern for scratches or things like that LOL. Hey what can I say, she just won't listen! Anyway for someone like her it seems like this might be a decent choice and they can be had for the $3K range so I won't cringe every time I see her fail to provide the TLC that us watchaholics tend to give our watches. She has a Hamilton 34mm watch that she likes and the size seems to work well for her. I think 36mm would be fine as well. I like that this watch has a date, is very legible, has lumed hands and indices, and 100m water resistance, while still being thin and wearable.

Any thougts one way or the other on these? Age range will be late 60's to early 70's. Are these known to be good watches long term? Any problems with the movement? Would you suggest an immediate full Rolex service when picking up a vintage model like this? Curious to hear all opinions. Thanks!

Why would you buy a vintage Rolex for someone who doesn’t appreciate watches? I would say go for a new Cartier tank

I would definitely consider a 36mm OP if I could find less than $4K. Most I see are in the $6K range unfortunately.

The workhorse look of the OP is the type of watch she'd wear. It's similar to the Hamilton that she likes. The tank is a bit dressier than needed. Thanks

I agree with your choice, a well maintained Rolex OP from the 80’s or 90’s is the real tank, durable, reliable and wearable on many occasions. It may cost a bit more than $3k, but difficult to find a better watch that fits your bill.

Let me ask a stupid question because I don't know how things work with vintage models.

If Rolex did a full service on a 1970 OP, would it come back as able to be taken in water? Or is it a situation where you should never take a vintage era watch in water regardless of the service history?

Great suggestion Kat. I purchased an OP34 pink dial for my wife a couple of years ago.
She is not a watch person but actually loves it and wears it everywhere. The subtle, not candy pink, seems to go with most wardrobes.
