Best vintage Buy at the moment?
With the economy the way it is and so many things going down is price like the vintage rolex market. I wanted to ask the collectors for your opinion on what is the best vintage rolex to buy right now ,that was so out of reach just 1 year ago?

I think it probably depends on where one's "starting point" is. I agree with eparisini, the 1665 in it's range is attractive as well as nice gilt dials (I'd add the 5513 and 1675 as well).
Pricing on the 1655 while still in five figures is better than it was. With B&P pricing is still up there for choice examples. A more modest approach would include the 5513(matt), 1675, 16750, 1680, etc... I've seen some attractive prices on nice examples of these references recently. As always condition and originality will dictate market value. |

1st off buy what you like not what others say is the hot model at the moment.Condition and price mean everything. When dealing in vintage you just never know what you may find from someone. If we are going from recent sales on forums and auctions I would personally buy some of the not so popular models now.Nipple dial 2 tone gmt 1675 would be 1 and any of the matte dialed transitional models.

The model 16750 matte-dialed, GMT's from the early 1980's are doing well and will continue to appreciate due to the low production numbers and the quick-set date feature. This is a great watch!
I also like the GMT 16760 "fat lady" from the mid 1980's which was also produced in very small numbers compared to other GMT's. My dark horse is the Tudor chronos, especially the "big blocks" which have been selling quite well. These are great watches that can be found in the $4000 range. The Tiger model chrono, from 1997 to early 2000's, is also very popular and sure to appreciate in time. As Greek noted, I also like the two-tone nipple-dialed GMT's, but they do not have the following of the older stainless steel GMT's.

1675's matt dials (no service dial) are bound to pick up some nice value .

I don't know if you would consider these "vintage" but Zenith Daytonas even the SS are lower than when the economy was chugging along.
Might be an opportune time to pick one up. |

There are a few good deals out there, I am about where I need to be with my collection. I might buy a SS Sub ceramic when it comes out. This way I will have the LV Sub, the old SD, the Sub no date, and this will be fine for me in terms of the Sub. I don't want the new SD DeepSea as it is too bulky for my taste.
Heck if we all live long enough all of our watches will be classics.

Non sport watches seem to be quite reasonable.

there are a lot of posts as to the desireability of the 16750 matte....what about the 16750 gloss w/g surrounds? Are they still a desireable find (comparatively)?

In this case the matt dial combined with the acryllic crystal yet possessing the 3xxx fast beat movement with quick-set date feature. Not a lot of them were made (in the overall scheme of things). That said, the latter gloss/WG version still has a lot going for it IMO in that one gets the lovely acryllic crystal and classic case in a great dailt wear watch. |

Thanks for the explanation Mike - appreciate the collector point of view. I dont know why I'm interested in the 'value' as I'd never sell it....just curious. It's been my daily wear watch since 1985. It's at the RSC / Dallas right now for a 'spa visit'. I cant wait to get it back. I know I love the way it looks. Very iconic appearence. Although it's a popular model, you still dont run across it as often as the Sub.

The gloss dials also have a fairly good following, especially if you have one with the complete package. They were also produced for a limited time, from about 1983 to 1987.
