Icon20 Watches to avoid at retail

Hey everyone, I'm a frequent at my AD (am on the wait list for a White Face SS Skydweller and the Rose Oysterflex Yachtmaster). I know that I have a long wait for those, and am embracing the idea of being offered things that aren't necessarily on my list but may be fun for a bit to "trade" back when I get the call. I've seen mentions on reddit and other forums of certain watches that are "offloaded" by the AD's because they are undesirable or available essentially new for cheaper than retail.

Is there a list of those to "beware" of? From what I can gather it's two-tone Datejusts, some two-tone Sky Dwellers, but that's all I've figured out. Can someone help me not make noob mistakes here?

Rule of thumb is. Don't look at watches as investments. And don't buy anything you won't enjoy. Don't buy a substitute watch. Your watch collecting journey will be so much happier if you stick to these rules

Speaking for myself I always buy the watches that I want to own and wear that's the one and only important thing for me.

Avoid buying anything you don't want to wear and enjoy! Wearing a piece on your wrist that you truly like and are enjoying is the best ROI!

OP, my advice is to hold out for what you truly want. Buying substitute watches has never worked for me

Wish TRF had more watch talk, and less buy sell trade investment speculation talk.

This honestly.

Been going back and reading threads back from 2005. Crazy there was a time when there were watches available for sale with discount on top of that.

I would go the Rolex site and get the retails for the watches - then take that info and cross reference on grey websites and do the math. That will give you some good insight on what you could be upside down on if after you buy you want to sell it.

The biggest noob mistake of all is to try to buy watches strategically instead of focusing on the watches you sincerely want to wear.

If they offer you a watch and you like it, then buy it. If you don't like it, don't buy it.

It's ok to like a watch that other people don't like, you are not losing anything if you enjoy wearing it. And you don't have to worry about getting a fake or a lemon if you are buying directly from the AD.

This.

I did think exactly that when I was reading the OP’s original post.

Both of those watches mentioned, whilst lovely watches, aren’t “desirable” in the flippable sense. The AD might claim they have waitlists for them, but they are dreaming, you would need to be very dedicated to the hobby to pick the phone up for either now.

Buy what you love and want to wear.

Thanks everyone - as I suspected, I was overthinking it.

I wasn't sure about the Rose Gold Yachty until I saw it in person. Even with the rubber band haha.

Thanks again.

Even if a watch is less desirable, if you like it and it fits your style, it can still be a great addition to your collection.

The important question is what channel are u using to "trade" the piece? Private sale at ebay/watch forums? Or off-loading it to a grey market reseller? Or the AD itself?

Unless u go private sale yourself, you will get raped on pretty much EVERYTHING except gmt, daytona and possibly Sky Dweller. Private sale means getting lowball offers from everyone and huge chance of the transaction going sideways.

Even submariner is now trading BELOW retail if u sell it to a grey market reseller. The prices have started falling and only the models I mentioned above are holding premium. These are the ONLY pieces ya can flip to grey market and make $$$$.

Everything will hit the shitters early next year.
