SeaDweller circa 1980's...good buy?
I stopped by my local watch craftsman, and he has a pre-owned sea dweller with 3035 movement that he is trying to sell for $4600. Before the sale, he will do his own service (included in the sales price), which I have seen before and will make the watch look brand new. He will then offer a 3 year warranty, even if I smack the sapphire on the pavement, etc...
Is it worth buying a watch that's 20 years old, as long as he takes it down to parts and rebuilds it...and then guarantees his work? I looks like I could get a SD "new in box" from this list for about the same amount. Less of a guarantee, however. Thanks, JR |

Welcome to the forum Jake!!!
I think that price is to high for that age....Unless its a transitional model, with all original boxes and papers!!Even then I would try for a newer series for the same price or lower...Just my 2 cents.! Enjoy your stay with us,and good luck on your search for a Rolex!! Rob. PS: the Sea Dweller is a great choice by the way!! I love mine.....

Thanks for the advice! The jeweler/seller was attempting to tell me how the 3035 movement was more durable than the 3135 that is out in the "new-fandangled" SD's. Has anyone heard of this?

It can't be a 1665 as they were never made with a 3035 movement.
It is a 16660. There was a cross-over period in the early 1980's with the 1665 and 16660 models.

It would seem like you would have a lot of bargaining power with any of these used watches in like of the current economic environment.

If it is an all-original triple 6 (16660), that sounds like a really good price. Question is whether it has original dial & hands (if it's a 666). Is the bracelet worn out, or is it fairly tight? Any large dents/dings in the case?
If it is a 16600 SD, I agree w/ others....look for a much newer one (D, Z, or M serial)

Yup i would look to get a newer one. Last year i was offered a 1999 SD with box papers and WTY for 3500.00. That was also from a Rolex AD. Ron

Thanks for all of the advice. You all are great, and really make a newbie feel at home. I still have yet to confirm that it is a 16660, but since it does have the 3035 movement, it should be a '666'(as the 16600's started with a 3135 movement, no?).
So that brings up the question: Is there a difference between certain years of the 16660 model that would cause some to be worth more than others? I've heard about the matte dial and flat hour markers. Is their presence indicative of a more valuable item? Jake |
