Well if you are worried about losing value, you better buy gold bar instead of a 18k watch.
When I decided to get my IWC Big Pilot, I knew i'd lose heft amount of money at the moment I made purchase, but who cares? It's mine and I'm still enjoying it. |

Super long term, the scrap value of the gold will eventually exceed the price you pay inflated away. :)

It all depends on what you pay for it vs. the price it commands if/when you decide to sell it. It's that simple.
Typically, these posts draw out the 'if you buy gold you will always lose money' responses, but these "sages" somehow overlook the simplicity that goes into deterring just what losing money really means. Now, having said that, the prices of the DD40 (as well as a lot of other PM pieces) has gotten to the point that it clouds the issue of just that number is going to be. Can these prices actually sustain? Will they go even higher? Who knows, but the real issue for buying one of these watches is if you're worrying about depreciation, you probably shouldn't be buying one. Just my two cents. |

A modern 36 has almost 5 ounces of gold, so that alone is almost 10k usd.
You can buy preowned for 15-20k, avoid the hit. |

I think you question is a legit one. Despite what a lot of others here say about watches not being investments, no body likes to lose money. Some PM Rolexes def can lose money if bought at MRSP. Buy smart from a trusted seller and you'll probably minimize the hit. DD40 is an awesome piece. I bought mine and never looked back.

I think the DD is a kind of luxury purchase for some folks in the same way they need a new Ferrari every year. Nothing wrong with last years Ferrari, they just want a new one. And a new gold DD to go with it. Both older models get traded in. Loss/resale value is a consideration, just not a big one. |
