I'll get over it one day but for now I'm flying under the radar.

I respect the fact that you own a small business, but I strongly disagree with that point of view.

If you’re well liked, popular and your employees like you, the watch you wear doesn’t matter. Doesn’t matter one iota...

I’m not a business owner, but I have an executive level position and manage close to 100 people.

How you treat people is what matters. If they know you have a Rolex but you won’t wear it in front of them, they’re going to think you’re an arrogant prick.

Also, I think it’s sort of arrogant to say, “I won’t wear my gold Rolex in front of my neighbors.” Why not? It’s almost as if you have a superiority complex and you’re better than all of them. I wear a Rolex watch to neighborhood BBQs, and I can freely do so because I don’t feel superior to them. Plus, they see the house I live in and the car I drive so why not the watch???? How am I going to hide my house and cars???

I wear what I want when I want. I never consider what others might feel. Very few people notice or care what you wear.

Yup, I was too shy to wear it, so I dumped it in the bubbly

I agree, I'd wear one without thinking twice, but wouldn't be boastful or showy about it.

OP, I think I get what you are saying. A few thoughts...not meant to offend or stir up controversy, but more so the reflect on upon an alternative perspective:

1) Many have shared here, and in similar threads, the basic premise of "not caring about what others think about you." I think is is fair advice, because there is a tendency for humans beings to judge others based upon superficial stuff (ie. what kind of watch is being worn), and we should not be riled up or bothered about this.

2) Another parallel stream of thought here has been that one should not be ashamed to have whatever material possessions that they have, especially if they have "worked hard for it." I am also in agreement with this. However, it seems that with some (but not all!) of these type of comments, there is an assumption that the people who have "less" somehow worked not as hard as "us" who did. Who knows this for sure...I know I don't.
I know that although I've worked pretty hard to get where I'm at, if I'm honest, my willpower and talent was not all that got me there. Circumstances and the right people taking a chance on me at the right time also played a part. Maybe not everyone's circumstances reward hard work the same?

3) With the above two thought processes, the protagonist is the individual. What I mean is that the emphasis is on how the Rolex (or insert whatever visible luxury item you want) wearer feels and is affected by what others may perceive. I think the OP is coming from the opposite paradigm. Rather, he is concerned for how his watch wearing choices, in certain contexts, may have a detrimental effect on others. In other words, he's trying to be empathetic towards a fellow human who, for whatever reason, may not be in the same economic position. I don't think the OP is ashamed of working hard to earn what he has, nor do I think he's ashamed of having some well-deserved nice watches. I just think he's trying to be courteous to a friend/loved one. I think this is a reasonable thing for him to wrestle with.

4) Comments have also been made along the lines of "if your friend feels that way, then that says something about your friend." Maybe it does, maybe it doesn't. I do think it says something about the OP that he cares enough not to hurt his friend, regardless of how unreasonably fragile that friend may be.

I'm not trying to lecture anyone here. I think, for this topic as well as so many other here, many will just agree to disagree. I think I understand where many are coming from here...just wanted to offer a slightly different perspective.

Putting flame suit on now. I truly wish all to wear whatever they choose to wear in good conscience and good health!
Excellent post! Using logic vs emotion to understand somebody's thought process. Unfortunately, a lot of keyboard warriors are flexing their finger muscles to project their insecurities.

From a gold watch perspective, I own two gold Patek dress watches and a 116613LB. But I most likely will not own a full Gold Sub/DD or equivalent. Just not my style. But I respect those that do own and wear them. Maybe a few other posters could demonstrate similar acceptance to a position not their own.
