Advice on getting "real" with my AD

OP, congrats on your new Rolex. you did the right thing. wear it in great health.

for future reference, three years is a very long time to be waiting for pretty much any Rolex and there is no watch that is worth that much time and effort ("checking in" every 6 weeks at the AD)

in some cases, going grey is the way to go.

I'm of the opinion that its never worth it to burn a bridge for a petty, especially with the market correcting and you may soon be able to pick up some new pieces from the case directly

If that’s the case Rolex CPO will be much more attractive than the grey. I’m sticking with my AD either way.

In my experience, never ever let the AD be privy to your dealings. Rather than your a-b-c above, this is what the Dealer sees:
a) You're not loyal to them, you're willing to go grey. (An SA told me to my face, referring to another buyer but clearly inferring I would be in the same category should I stray from the fold.)
b) You bought a used watch and don't want the dealer experience. Why should they sell you a new one?
c) The fact that you spent money means nothing. You didn't spend it with them.

So whatever you do, don't wear it when visiting or even send your SA a pic of the GMT as if to say "Sorry, could have been you!" They will see it as "Well... I'll delete that client from my list."

You're still a mere minnow until you're giving the entire staff Tequila Tastings on a regular basis.

No one knows for sure. And you could be right. But I think we are a long ways away from that, if it even happens.

I’m in a similar boat …but I have bought other things…and still not getting any calls. So don’t spend just yet assuming it will change your situation.

Frustrating …and Probably during my next visit I will give the manager a word and move on to a different store.

Already seeing steel DJ’s around MSRP at grey dealers, and it’s just a matter of time. The ONLY Rolex’s that were hard to get at MSRP 4 years ago were steel Daytona’s and to a lesser extent GMT’s. Every other model became the “next best option” as the market went crazy, until you couldn’t find anything at AD’s. All of those “next best option” pieces will be the first to drop, as they are now. I’m confident that we’ll see DJ’s and some other models in stock by 4th quarter 2023.

OP, you did the right thing going to DavidSW. I'd do the same if I was looking. ADs created places like DavidSW - so...who cares. They have the goods - you pay a little more and get what you want.

Now you have a watch. Think, you could have randomly died in those three years worth of the AD jerking you off.

I agree with some but not with all. I think you said a few that you have been trying to get watches from numerous dealers over the past years and have not been able to?

Great to see that you have an outcome that you were happy with. DavidSW is amazing. I have bought from him before.

Please be mindful of the other side of the transaction from the business side. Supply does not meet demand by quite a large margin in the past few years. Who knows in the future. Though as a business owner, if you had constrained supply you would sell the merchandise to your most valuable customers first and foremost. Anything else would be a poor business decision.
