not surprised at all. Mum and dad both wears rolexes and they had no idea on which model they are. The most recent one i came across was my gp. He had no idea he wore a black sub

I would hazard a guess that those of us on the forum are in the minority of Rolex owners. I bet most Rolex owners would not know the exact model name, they go for the look of it and as far as they are concered it is "just" a Rolex, dependable and one less thing they have to worry about going wrong.

Most of us on the forum are into sports watches but the most common Rolex I see out and about is the Datejust followed by a distant second by the Sub.

I have a 34MM AK, and a 34MMTT Date. The wife has a 31MM Datejust. Now if you asked me which movements are inside, I'd have that same dumbfounded look on my face!!!

If he didn't seem he would wear fake watches then it could be one... if you see a General Manager wearing a Rolex.. your first impression most of the times would be that it must be real.. because he might have the money to buy one.. on the other hand.. if he knows that then he can perfectly wear whatever he wants and it would still be recognized as real by most of the people around him...
I wear jeans, shirts and sandals so using the above reasoning, most of the people should think my watches are not the real thing..

No surprise. This is the reason that I don't compliment people on their watches anymore. I once said "Hey, nice DateJust" to a fellow in a showroom while we were checking out the same vehicle. He said "No...it's a Rolex". Usually you come off looking like the idiot in those situations so I just remove myself from them. Oh well. I'll keep my comments to myself, haha.

Pretty simple way around that if you must comment. "Hey, nice watch" (or some variation). Then the possible responses are easy

1) "thanks" with a bit of finality - obviously don't want to talk about it
2) "it's a rolex" - duh, that's probably why the comment came in the first place, no further conversation
3) "thanks... blah blah" - green light to maybe say something about it and even mention a model name

Around here people notice/talk about watches a lot more than "normal" I think. When I'm in Canada/US/UK the only people that seem to pick up on the watch are jewlers and maitre d's - both types tend to instantly become very interested, nobody else cares and I'm not suprised that there are people out there that have no idea they have a datejust or whatever. All middle manager Frank knows is that senior upper middle manager Bob has a Rolex, and so does his sometimes golfing buddy Mike with the Merc and silicone-enhanced wife #2. Frank walks into an AD and walks out with a datejust or sub because when he went in and asked to see "a Rolex" the guy (or girl in the deep-V'd power suit if the manager is really sharp) behind the counter brought out those as "our most popular models".

That sounds like the OP Date. As I previously stated, it's a 34mm (same as the AK and older OP models), which is the smallest size designated as a "men's watch." Also, I'd hazard a guess that it's one of the least likely to be faked, as it's less popular than the DJ, Sub, etc.

Anyway, as far as the original post goes...It's more common than you think..

Alot of people receive the watches as gifts and heirloom...not everyone wears their penis on their wrist..

A lot of people buy it because it's a Rolex, and they wouldn't even care that all Rolexes have their own inhouse movements.
I think that it's funny, the stigma attached to Rolexes. Especially lately, when watchmakers like Omega and Breitling are starting to make their own inhouse movements, and not just their enhanced versions of ETA movements. I have personally never seen anything wrong with the ETA movements, but I do think it is more special to have a watch with it's own inhouse movement. The Omega Aqua Terra 8500, which I purchased recently, is the first Omega inhouse Coaxial movement. It is almost 2 grand more than the same model with the older movement. I have also owned many Breitlings, and I haven't even asked what the price on their new B2 movement is!
The more of these watchmakers who make their own movements I see, the more I see the solid value in Rolexes.

I bought my first Rolex, a 5513, about 30 years ago. I owned it for 15 years before selling it, (with a self-satisfied smugness for double the $300 purchase price). In the entire time I owned it I thought of it as a Rolex, occasionally as a Submariner. I didn't know it was a 5513 - just that it was different from those garish red and blue ones (GMT's). I wasn't a WIS in those days, so the model number made no difference at all to me.

I guess I had more important things to think about back in the day.
