I'm thankful for threads like this, which remind me of how lucky I am not to have a boss. I had bosses for about a decade, but got tired of being reminded how unemployable I am.

Man, but I commend the OP for thinking this deep into all the possible nuances in the employment setting. I wonder if it is ever an issue if one dares to have a more attractive wife than one's boss's wife.

I think the problem starts when your boss IS interested in watches and has scrimped and saved his whole life for his dream watch like a $100k Patek, Richard Mille etc. (basically something that he is really proud of and that clearly sets him apart from the rest) Then you walk in with a $500k watch yet your on 3 times less money than him lol, that is when it will most likely cause problems that will affect your career.

If you can afford a $500k watch, I wouldn't be too worried about your career.

It staggers the imagination that so far 15 people would actually allow what their boss wears to dictate what they put on their wrists!

My boss wears a Casio and is perfectly happy with it. He's never noticed whatever watch I wore to work. His boss wears a Speedy. The two ladies I work with know I wear Rolex, Omeeega, and other brands but never make a big deal out of it. One will tease me from time to time about "all those Rolexes".

I think in that case, the career is just a hobby. You might buy the company your boss works for and fire your boss if you really want.
