Left over chicken parmesan here. Not bad at all at all.

Anybody here agree that there is no such thing as time? It's something our minds invented based on the earth revolving on its axis, giving us day and night. Take that away, there is only the present. (there's only the present anyway, the rest is mind images...) I know you won't agree, but try to see through it...

Put out the garbage cans this P.M. One was only about 1/5th full, so didn't put it out. I may change my mind on that however.

You know the sound of two hands clapping. But what is the sound of one hand clapping?

I saw that Simpsons episode. Bart nailed it. Just close one hand rapidly, keeping the fingers open and you can slap those four fingers down into the palm and clap one handed!

Now of course to stay on the original post, if nothing has an antonym, does that make nothing something???

I really don’t want to get into this . . . So hard . . . really want to . . . don’t want to take time . . . but subject is so relevant to a Rolex forum . . .ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

Ok "time" is too relevant of a subject for a thread about nothing so I will link Wikipedia and be done with it

Disclaimer: This artical refrences Immanuel Kant so it could be very relevant to our discussion of nothing as he was an atheist and yet a practical thiest all at the same time.

Explodingtaco - Thanks for the link. I find what they say agrees with my hypothesis, since they also cannot come up with any definition of time except in terms of a sequence of events.

Still haven't really decided whether or not to put out the garbage can 1/5th full. I may check tomorrow A.M. to see if there's anything decomposing in there, Heaven forbid, and base my decision on that... Larry.

But, more importantly, will Sylar regain his powers and wreak havoc on the world as we know it? Will Peter change alliances and act to save mankind? Will Hiro ever free himself of self-doubt and wield his mighty sword of justice? Will Mohinder ever vanquish his naiveté and solve the biological mystery he's pursued in the name of his father? Who next will die only to be resurrected in the most incredulous possible way? Finally, is there no end to this misery?

I can see what age and having kids has done to my brain cells - it is too hard to comment on time and its definition. All I can guess in some vague sense is that time is the measurement of the past. The present is the bridge between past and future and the future is based on expectations formed by past experience!

Do you think we could invite Stephen Hawking over for a remark or two?

And as for nothing, it still makes sense that it's only nothing when it is unacknowledged.

Larry, I would vote for taking out the trash. Less chance of dogs or raccoons getting into it. Than your trash can will have nothing in it.

Lisa - Pretty interesting take on time. You referred to it not in terms of sequential events. I stand by my hypothesis that the reason we have been groping for a definition is because it does not exist except in our limited minds...

Re the garbage - I've decided to put it out. Be right back.

Re garbage bin - An interesting sequence of events took place.
I went out to check on the one I did not put out, found that it is not even 1/5 full and just has a few old papers laying on the bottom. I was pondering whether to put it out anyway, when the truck pulled up and emptied the black bin that was already out. So the decision was made for me, and it can wait until next week.

Lisa - Your take on time is quite interesting since you did NOT use a sequence of events to describe it. Still, it would be good to hear from Stephen Hawkings if he's available... Larry

Hi, Carolina. Seinfeld is what, in part, inspired this thread. And just like the show, see how much fun you can have when something's about nothing?

Whenever someone here gets banned, I think of Kramer and that fruit stand episode:

So...if time is only evidenced by sequence of events, does that mean when "nothing" happens, time stands still?

If so, then my watch is seriously fast after reading this thread.
