Yes it is an icon and perhaps a bit over done as one. I believe even back as a youth, it was in my mind's eye as the definition of a diver's watch. Frankly I'm pretty happy with the less business looking Omega I have. I like the waves and its looks better to me; less stark. Now for me, if I were to go the sub route I suspect I'd go for the no date version. I like that one a lot.

To each their own of course. Certainly the Submariner holds a special place in the Rolex line, iconic even. But when I first saw in the flesh & then tried on a Submariner I was very underwhelmed!
To me the Explorer line screams Rolex more than the Submariner.

Webster's definiton:

bench·mark -- noun -- \ˈbench-ˌmärk\: something that can be used as a way to judge the quality or level of other, similar things

a : a point of reference from which measurements may be made

b : something that serves as a standard by which others may be measured or judged

also defined as: "Rolex Submariner":

Cheers!

Problem with the Sub C and I have one is it is too blingy. Don.'to get me wrong it is superb but the way it flashes in the light and the lugs mean it is not what it was. The tool element that is copied is gone, it is a parody of itself. Great watch but not iconic and actually it misses the point.
