Nice story! True dedication and perseverance in savings with a great reward at the end. Personally I like these type of stories more than those where someone buys 3 day-date watches in a single day because they can't decide which one. Good for this chap and tell him that many on the forum admire him for his efforts! Cheers!

Not surprisingly, most bar owners toss them and he had also been doing so for over the past 20 years. To eliminate 'dumpster diving' by indigents/scavengers and the related garbage being tossed about in the process, he eventually decided to store and cash them in on his own. It apparently worked out OK. Imagine how many Rolexes 20 years (or $35-40K accrued from redeemed bottle deposits) would have bought.

Is he just recycling glass or is he paying a deposit on the bottles?

Reminds me of that Seinfeld episode with Newman driving the bottles in his mail truck.

He is redeeming the initial 5-cent deposit assessed on the bottles at their time of purchase from the distributor. In CA there is a $.05 CRV charge on glass soft drink and beer bottles of 12 oz. or less. It is similar to your earlier recollections of redeeming soda pop bottles.

I remember that episode except that it wouldn't be too practical (or healthy) to save for a Rolex by drinking the required number of beers over a period of 5 years. It's far more feasible (and profitable) to simply collect the customer empties and redeem them.

If it is in a state with a deposit then he is paying the deposit and then turning the bottles back in to get his deposit back. I assume they most bar owners just figure the deposit into their pricing/profits and just pitch them. Smart on this fellas part.

That's certainly one way of saving for watch money, with his volume it adds up :-) I toss pocket change to a bucket and when I redeem it on Coinstar it gives me enough money to buy a couple of NATO straps LOL

about $35 per week over a period four years would definitely do it. That's a lot of beer.
