You started this because of my comment in the other thread. I asked how a datejust is any less of a sports watch that an Explorer and you didn’t respond.
By definition the datejust is in the classic line, but it is a water resistant watch with seconds hand on a bracelet, and most have lume....no less sporty than an Explorer.
It is not a dress watch

Rolex calls it a classic. Though, I wore a diamond face Movado every day for like 10 years. It was a dress watch. I rocked it in all situations. My buddy has an oyster fluted black 41 he wears daily (ridiculous pineapple bathing suits and wedding Tux)... wear your watch the way you want. Unless it’s a Cellini lol.

Rolex defines it as a classic watch so there you go.

It's one of the reasons I will never part with my DJII--it can fill both niches.

I guess I would consider it a classic or dress watch, the sports watches having a purpose like diving, multiple time zones etc.

Smooth bezel, somber blk/wht dial and oyster/jubilee = sporty
Fluted bezel, colorful/diamond dial and jubilee = classic

Concur your comment. I have a 36 & 41 both in SS/WG. Beautiful watches.

I find my Datejust II with black dial sporty and classic at the same time. Datejust 36 and 41 more classic dress watches.

It's a classic piece, first and foremost. It's water resistant and robust, but doesn't look like a sports watch to me.

And of course the Explorer is shown by Rolex as being in the Professional line. The DJs are all in the Classic line. However most folks don't wear their Submariner or SeaDweller only when they are diving so I imagine you can call it what you want and wear them when you want.

I didn’t know a sport watch couldn’t also be a classic...
I would say it’s less sporty than some watches and sportier than others.
